Using the Apple Books app in macOS (formerly known as iBooks), you can download your Books to your Mac, iPhone, IPad, or other iOS devices for reading offline. B

Where Are Apple Books Downloads Stored in macOS?

ut where are Apple Books downloads stored on your Mac? There’s no Books folder in your user directory, and there’s no Show in Finder option when viewing downloaded books in the app.

The answer is that the downloaded Apple Books location depends on the type of file you’re looking for. That’s because the Books app allows users to browse and read both purchased books from the Apple Books Store as well as compatible ePUB files that a user manually adds to the app.
ibooks download

Apple Books Location for Purchased Books

For books that you’ve purchased from the Apple Books Store and then downloaded to your Mac, you can find them at the following location, opening the Books directory.

apple books download location purchased
There you’ll find a list of ePUB files for your purchased books. Apple, unfortunately, uses unique identifiers for the file names, so you’ll need to use Quick Look to find the books you’re looking for.

Another issue is that purchased books from the Apple Books Store are protected with Digital Rights Management (DRM), so while you can make backup copies of these files for use in the Books app, you won’t be able to open them in other eBook applications like Calibre.

Apple Books Location for iCloud Imported Books

If you’ve imported compatible ePUB and PDF files into iBooks, the app will sync those for you via iCloud so that you can read them on your iOS devices and other Macs.

This process for ePUB and PDF files means, however, that these books are stored separately from purchased books.

First, you need to ensure that your iCloud account is configured to sync your imported books.

To configure your iCloud to sync up with your imported books, go to System Preferences > iCloud > iCloud Drive Options to make sure that Books is checked.
icloud apple books syncing
Once it is, you can a Terminal command to navigate to the appropriate directory on your Mac, since if you try to navigate there manually in Finder, it will switch to showing you the iCloud documents folder instead. Open the Terminal app and open the iBooks directory with the command.

This open command will open a Finder window displaying all of your imported Apple Books files.apple books download location icloud
Since you added these files to the Apple Books app, they shouldn’t have DRM and you can, therefore, copy and backup these files for use in other apps that are compatible with the ePUB format.

Backing Up Individual Apple Books

The steps above are useful if you want to grab backup copies of your entire Apple Books library or at least many of its titles.

If you only want to back up one or two books, you can instead launch the Apple Books app, find and download the desired book, and then simply click and drag the book out of the app and onto your desktop (or any other directory in Finder).

This process will create a correctly named ePUB that you can then manually move or back up. The same restrictions with DRM for purchased books apply.

Create stunning multi-touch books for iPad and Mac

iBooks Author is Apple's attempt at revolutionizing textbooks, cookbooks, history books, picture books, and more for iPad and Mac. With it, you can create all of the above and more all via a classically easy to use Apple interface.

To get you started quickly, there are lots of Apple-designed templates that merely require you to add your own text and drag and drop images. To add interactive photo galleries, movies, Keynote presentations, 3D objects and more, there are simple widgets which make things very easy indeed. To check how your book is looking, you can preview it on your iPad at any time although note that you'll need iBooks 2 installed on your iOS device to do this.

The widgets are one of the outstanding features of iBooks Author. They enable you to add everything from a photo gallery to a Keynote (Keynote ’09 v5.1.1 or later) presentation and can be easily identified in your Table of Contents. You can also add a voice-over to make it easier for sight-impaired readers to read your books.

If you don't like the look or layout of your book, you can easily re-arrange it using the Book Navigator including the possibility of adding a cover and table of contents. In addition, you can import a chapter written in Pages or Microsoft Word and automatically create a portrait view of your book which makes it easier for readers to focus on the text.

The final step is to submit your finished work to the iBookstore and hey presto, you're a self-published author. However, be aware that once you've issued it to the iBookstore, the terms and conditions stipulate that you can't sell it elsewhere. The exports are in iBook format but you can also export them as PDF files which any e-reader or tablet can read. Presumably however, any multimedia elements are excluded from PDF files so the result won't be as good as if you publish to the iBookstore. Alternatively, you can just export a pure Text version.

As you'd expect from an Apple application, iBooks Author is a very stylish and easy to use application. If you've ever used Keynote to make a presentation, then you'll feel very at home with iBooks Author.

iBooks Author is a superb iBook authoring package which produces stunning results with relatively little effort.

Ratings and Reviews

iOS 15 has been a really buggy update whether it’s on my iPad or iPhone. It has terribly affected Books in the following ways: (1) The Book App keeps reloading my PDFs, etc. each time I open it. I’ve restarted my devices and it still does this. (2) Since the iOS 15 update (and the latest fixes to the iOS) not all of my stuff in Books is syncing properly across my devices and even my iMac. I regularly (like weekly or more often) back up my devices to the iCloud, so why is this happening? I’ve already lost a few PDFs because of this. (3) Since the latest iOS (and subsequent updates to it), I keep getting in the Books App that my iCloud Storage is Full. I pay for 50 GB of storage monthly and have only used up 8.8 GB to date. And that is the total of backing up all my Apple Devices, so I shouldn’t be seeing “Your iCloud Storage is Full”. In fact, I wonder if this iCloud Storage Full glitch is part of the problem why the stuff in my Books App is not syncing correctly. I’ve looked all of this up online and many others are having the same problems. People are warning others not to update yet to the iOS 15 update. I wish I would have listened. PLEASE PLEASE fix this. Thank you!

Fix it

I used to have this application to have books read out loud but after the new iOS it’s gone crazy , did used to highlight the sentence of where I am reading but now it highlights the whole page, i usually have the book starts reading at the beginning and it reads it continuously but now it stops at each chapter which is really annoying, i used to mark the page where of I stopped the book and then I will just ask it to be read out loud when I want it to start again but now I have to start at the beginning of each chapter I can’t do it from the page ,now it has to be at the beginning of each chapter. One other thing that keeps happening is that the application keeps removing and deleting some of the books from it and sometimes whenever I am downloading a book it’s telling me I don’t have the space even though I have a lot of storage left and it deletes the books in it without asking or anything. Please fix this .

Feature requests

A good start. Needs the following features:

1. More font options.
2. The ability to sync progress across devices.
3. More options to change the margins and spacing. I feel there is a lot of wasted space on the sides and I can’t do anything for change it.

A pipe dream feature:
Some sort of integration with Overdrive. Kobo has overdrive built in. Nooks have the ability to read library books through adobe digital editions, a computer, and a cable (very 2001 I know.) Kindle e readers can get library books sent to them from the Overdrive/Libby app. Work out whatever deal you need to with the owners of Overdrive so books can either be sent to the books app like kindle or have it built in like kobo. I feel that Apple should be all over this since they are about learning and education and making a strong connection to libraries would be a huge win.

Also, why no Books+ service? Maybe work deals with publishers that would excite them because a ton of people have iPhones in their pocket. Or have it be a publishing platform for little indie authors to get discovered? Or be a place with serialized stories?

Apple. Call me. I got ideas.

Now discussing:

Where does iBooks store files?

1 min read

If you like reading on the go, then you're no doubt an iBook fan, but have you ever wondered where iBooks store files on your Mac?

What is iBooks?

iBooks, or as it's now called Apple Books, is a free e-reader app that allows users to search for books or audiobooks, download, read and listen across multiple devices. It's a great little app, but it often leaves people wondering where iBooks are stored once downloaded?

Where does iBooks store files on Mac?

If you've been scouring your Mac and your downloads with no luck, don't worry; here's how to locate your iBooks library location:

Path to iBooks folder

  1. Open a new Finder window.

  2. From the top menu, select Go > Go to Folder.

  3. Type in the below and press Go: ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService/Data/Documents/iBooks

  4.  To access your iBooks, select the Books folder.

Contents of iBooks folder

The downside to iBooks for some people is that you can't change the iBooks library location. For some reason, Apple decided to keep that slightly hidden, but at least now you know how to find it. It does make me wonder, what else is hidden on Mac?

How to find hidden media files on your Mac

The quickest way to locate hidden and secret files within a folder you already have open is to press the Command-Shift-Period key.

How to find hidden files on Mac

This will reveal any lurking folders, and if you press that shortcut again, the folder will go back to being hidden.

It's worth mentioning that Apple does have its reasons, so be sure not to delete anything you think you might need later or that could affect your macOS.

Hidden media doesn't always mean secret files; what about forgotten ones too? I always use CleanMyMac X to rediscover my forgotten files with their Large and Old Files Module that lets you sort items by access date; here's how:

  1. Launch the app — download the free version here.

  2. Select Large & Old Files from the sidebar.

  3. Press Scan, and once complete, take a look at the By Access Date section.

  4. Select items for deletion and press Remove.

Now you know where iBooks are stored and how to find hidden files.
