Robinhood, which started its NASDAQ listing last week under the ticker HOOD in one of the most anticipated and unusual IPOs of the year, and which saw its stock halted several times due to volatility a few days later, is dealing with some backlash from Reddit’s wallstreetbets army.

“I don’t recall seeing any positive post about RH IPO. I only saw negative comments about it on WSB,” one person posted on Reddit.

“I am positively telling anyone i know not to buy $HOOD,” another one replied.

Robinhood was one of the most commented stocks during its IPO week on WallStreetBets, according to The Street.

Some investors are still angry at the fact that earlier this year, Robinhood halted trading of some stocks popular on the Reddit subthread r/WallStreetBets. Retail traders, who were intent on taking down hedge-fund short sellers by buying shares of stocks that didn’t seem to have much of a chance of success, were unable to trade stocks including GameStop, AMC Entertainment and Bed Bath & Beyond. Robinhood said last week that it continuously monitors the markets and makes changes where necessary. “In light of recent volatility, we restricted transactions for certain securities to position closing only,” according to a statement on its website at the time. The company also raised margin requirements for certain securities.

A Reddit user posted simply wrote “Jan 28 #neverforget,” a reference to that day, according to CNN.

In addition, people are angry at the platform’s multiple outages, which let them unable to trade, which prompted several posters suggesting shorting Robinhood stock, CNN reports.

Jonathan Anastas, Board Chair at Alpha Esports Tech, tells GOBankingRates that “there is quite a bit of irony here.”

“Robinhood – the platform for “meme stock” trading, itself became a meme stock, both on upside news of activist investors and on the downside of insider sale intent being filed. Meaning, Robinhood itself is finding high share price volatility like many of the meme stock trades of which the platform found favor on, meaning, end of the day “you can live by the meme, but also die by it.”

Anastas adds that the person who has an active Robinhood account “is the same person who games 7 hours a day and trades alternative currencies and NFTs based on their passions, be it an influencer, an athlete, an artist or a brand.”

“We’re in a generational shift where enthusiast platforms are investments and marketplaces as much as they are places to express one’s passions.

Despite the anger, the stock was up 65% last Wednesday, at $77. HOOD, which had a dismal beginning on its first day on the NASDAQ, had quite the turnaround: the stock was up 120% for the week, according to CNBC.

So far today, HOOD is up 3.7%, at $57.

Stripe vs Square: Which Payment Gateway Should You Use in 2021?

Top players in the payment gateway industry are always advancing so they can be number one. After all, there are more ecommerce store owners than ever these days, and they all need a reliable way to collect payments from customers.

Two of the most well-established payment gateway options in the market today are Stripe and Square. Both offer businesses easy ways to process payments made online, leading technology, and plenty of ecommerce tools to make things simple for ecommerce store owners trying to run a business and make money.

Stripe vs Square: how are they different?

Stripe and Square have their own unique set of features designed to serve very different needs. And quite frankly, this can make deciding which payment gateway to use harder than you’d like it to be. That’s why we’re going to run a Stripe vs Square comparison, so you can make a data-driven decision for your small business.

Are you ready? Let’s take a look.

Stripe vs Square: What Do They Do?

Stripe was founded in 2011 and is a payment gateway that lets you accept credit card payments (in person or online) by transferring money between your merchant account and a payment processor. This is done using a physical credit card terminal or an online processor.

Still find this concept confusing? Here’s a visual representation to help you out:

Stripe has a cloud-based infrastructure designed for reliability, scalability, and security. Not to mention, it’s very developer-centric, works for business websites and applications, and is rooted in both code and design.

In addition, Stripe can be used as a standalone solution for those needing to send out invoices and collect payments for products or services. Though this is not the most common way to use Stripe, since most people integrate into the ecommerce sites, it’s just another way to use this flexible and powerful payment gateway.

According to Datanyze, Stripe makes up 15.39% of the market share (Stripe vs PayPal are always battling for the number one spot):

Stripe Market Share

To give you an idea of how powerful Stripe is, know this: retail giants like Lyft, Amazon, and Microsoft use Stripe. Talking about companies, Kinsta uses Stripe as well.

Square, on the other hand, is a bit older (founded in 2009) and is not technically a payment gateway. In fact, it’s more of an end-to-end payment processor or virtual terminal. Plus, unlike Stripe, which can be used on any compatible platform, Square is not a standalone payment gateway solution. Instead, it comes as part of a bigger ecommerce solution.

This software is extremely versatile because it essentially turns your customers’ devices into portable point-of-sales terminals. Because of this, you’ll often find that Square’s core product is actually their in-person POS system. It gives merchants a way to collect payments from customers by reading credit cards using a smart device or by manually entering in credit card information (in-person or over the phone).

That said, over the years Square has stepped up to the plate to compete with well-established companies such as Stripe. In fact, you can now use Square to easily collect payments from customers shopping in your online store.

Stripe vs Square: Getting Set up (Ease of Use)

Stripe Setup

Setting up a Stripe payment experience on your website ranges from being super simple to super complex, depending on that you need your payment gateway to do. And this just happens to be one of Stripe’s selling points.

The developer-centric focus gives you the flexibility to create a custom checkout process for customers. With Stripe Elements, you guarantee your customers input their information quickly and correctly thanks to real-time validation, dynamic localization, autofill functionality, and improved formatting and masking.

Better yet, Stripe Elements eliminates the need for a hosted payment page on your website. Instead, just create your own checkout form or add a Stripe donate button to your site to collect money from people with ease.

If you don’t have a lot of technical knowledge or a developer on your team to help, don’t worry. To use Stripe all you have to do is cut and paste a line of javaScript to your website. And if you’re using Stripe for WordPress, all you have to do is install an open-source Stripe plugin.

Managing payments made on your ecommerce site is also simple when you use Stripe because of its intuitive dashboard:

stripe dashboard

Stripe dashboard

Get a quick glimpse of site activity, check real-time charts, and even see if there are any actions required by you, such as unanswered disputes or identify verifications (which is perfect forminimizing credit card fraud).

Square Setup

On the flip side, with Square everything is centered around simplicity. All the software you need to accept payments and manage your business are in one centralized system. In fact, you can access advanced reporting tools, manage timecards, and even create marketing campaigns straight from the dashboard of your Square account:

Square dashboard

And as far as setting up Square goes, there are a few different options. To start, you can cut and paste a snippet of code (just like Stripe) and create a checkout option for customers right on your website. Or, you can use a plugin such as WooCommerce Square to extend your ecommerce platform and accept payments.

But perhaps the easiest solution is to build your very own Weebly store.

In April of 2018, Square acquired the Weebly ecommerce platform and integrated its payment gateway right into it so there is no to configure anything once your Weebly site is up and running. Unlike a self-hosted WordPress website, Weebly is fully hosted so you never have to worry about finding the right web hosting provider for your site.

Altogether, Square is a simple omnichannel solution for merchants wanting to sell anywhere without having to deal with complicated code or a bunch of third-party integrations.

Stripe vs Square: Transaction Fees and Setup Costs

Stripe

The cost of using Stripe is fairly straightforward. It’s a pay-as-go platform and there are no signup fees, making it an affordable option for businesses of all sizes.

Here’s a quick look at Stripe’s transaction fees:

  • Basic Transaction: 2.9% of the transaction + $0.30.
  • International Transaction: 3.9% per transaction (conversion fee may apply).
  • Large Transactions: discounted to 0.8% per transaction (capped at $5 – payment methods include ACH direct debit, ACH credit, and wire transfers).

For each chargeback, Stripe will charge you a $15 fee, unless the chargeback is decided in your favor. This is very competitive when compared to other payment gateways, except Square.

Square

Just like Stripe, Square doesn’t charge any signup fees or lock you into any type of contracts. Plus, they boast about not having any other kind of hidden fees either like authorization, statement, refund, PCI-compliance, business card, etc.

That said because Square provides both in-person and online transactions, as well as other business features, there are more costs associated with using them:

The following payment types will incur a 2.9% + $0.30 transaction fee:

  • Square invoices.
  • Online APIs.
  • Online stores.
  • Ecommerce card on file payments.

These payments types will incur a 3.5% + $0.15 transaction fee:

  • Card on file transactions.
  • Manually entered credit cards on physical hardware.
  • POS API keyed-in payments.
  • Manually entered credit cards online.

And, as we mentioned above, Square does not charge chargeback fees, which is rare and very appealing. Adding to that, Square offers customers Chargeback Protection up to $250 a month on qualifying transactions. This just goes to show you how much Square cares about their customers and their business.

Additional Square Pricing

Keep in mind Square does offer website owners the chance to create a Weebly store or a Square Online Store. But if that’s the route you want to take, you’ll have to pay extra.

To build an ecommerce store using the Weebly platform, Square has plans starting at $8/month. This can become more expensive as your online shop expands and you find yourself needing more functionality.

And if you want to create a Square Online Store, you can create a free store, or invest in premium plans ranging from $12-$72/month for features such as:

Winner: Stripe

Stripe vs Square: Accepted Payment Types

Stripe

Stripe makes things easy so businesses who use Stripe don’t have to deal with additional merchant accounts. Here are the types of payments you can accept in your online shop with Stripe:

  • Credit cards.
  • Debit cards.
  • International cards.
  • ACG direct debit and credit (a feature Square doesn’t have).
  • Wire transfers.

Stripe also accepts Bitcoin, which shows you that Stripe isn’t afraid to explore new areas and get involved with cutting edge technology. You can even create a Bitcoin donation button with Stripe by following a handful of easy steps.

In addition, Stripe accepts wallets such as Masterpass by Mastercard and Visa Checkout (among others). What’s great about this is the fact that Visa and MasterCard take up an impressive 80.1% of the card network.

credit card market share

Stripe also supports over 135 different currencies, so reaching an international customer base is never going to be a problem. The only downside to using Stripe is that there is currently no way for you to accept in-person payments.

Square

The Stripe vs Square comparison has become increasingly important over the years as Square has expanded its services to meet the needs of companies that want to do business in-person and online.

Square processes all major credit cards online:

  • Visa.
  • Mastercard.
  • Discover.
  • American Express.

Plus, it will accept Apple Pay, Android Pay, and eWallet payments. One thing that Square offers customers, that Stripe doesn’t, is checkout hardware. And the best part is, the card reader and POS for accepting mobile payments in-person is 100% free.

Stripe vs Square: Quality of Customer Service

Stripe Customer Support

Stripe hasn’t always had the best reputation when it comes to customer support. In fact, before 2018, there was no way for Stripe customers to access support in real-time.

To fix this, Stripe revealed in 2018 that all Stripe customers would now have access to 24/7 live chat and phone support to complement the existing email support offered during business hours (Mon–Fri 9 am–5 pm). And if you want to get in touch with fellow Stripe users, there’s the Freenode forum (#stripe).

Now it’s safe to say Stripe excels when it comes to customer support, especially when up against Square’s level of support. And this is before you realize that in addition to extensive documentation, Stripe has a dedicated support center full of articles and videos answering your most burning support questions:

Stripe support center

Stripe support center

One thing that may turn some people off is the fact that Stripe also offers premium support starting at a whopping $1000/month, which is great for large businesses processing a ton of payments, and not so great for small businesses with limited budgets.

While it may not seem fair to those that can’t afford $1000/month, we feel Stripe more than makes up for it with their 24/7 live chat and phone support that everyone has access to.

Square Customer Support

Square currently offers the following support options for customers:

  • Phone and email support.
  • Live chat.
  • Dedicated Twitter support: @SqSupport.

You can also tap into the Square Communities Forum by searching questions or keywords and networking with other Square users:

Square communities forum

Square communities forum

Though it may seem great on the surface, it’s worth noting that Square’s customer service is not always the best. Many people have complained about their accounts being frozen or terminated for no reason. And to make matters worse, when this happens, Square automatically cuts off your phone support and will only communicate with you via email, making it harder to resolve the issue.

Because of this, though, Square offers the same support channels as Stripe (live chat, phone, email, and even community forums), it doesn’t match the same quality that Stripe has worked so hard to establish over the years.

Winner: Stripe

Stripe vs Square: Documentation

Stripe

Stripe has very advanced and developer-friendly documentation, meaning to get through a lot of it, you’re going to need some coding, developing, or technical skills.

Stripe documentation

Stripe documentation

That’s not to say it’s not helpful. But if you don’t have a developer on your team (here’s where you can hire a WordPress developer), it’s likely you’ll come across something that’s hard for you to understand.

Square

On the other hand, Square sticks by the motto that everything should be simple and understandable for people of all skill levels. They have a Square Guides section with documentation to help you get started.

Square guides

Square guides

And if you’re a developer, there’s always the Developer Docs, Developer Blog, and dedicated Slack channel for developers (read: How to use Slack).

In all, Square has support for those just starting out and those that are more advanced, whereas Stripe sticks mostly to advanced documentation that helps people create fully customizable checkout experiences on their websites.

Winner: Square

Stripe vs Square: Ecommerce Integrations

Both Stripe and Square have ecommerce plugin integrations that work with popular ecommerce platforms. They also have an open API and developer’s tools, though Stripe’s are more advanced, come with more features, and include resources for building completely customizable checkouts.

But that’s where the similarities tend to stop.

Stripe

Stripe is very versatile, despite not having the same features as Square. For instance, it integrates with dozens of shopping carts including Easy Digital Downloads, Ecwid, and X-Cart. It also works with a variety of ecommerce platforms such as Squarespace, Shopify, and Shopify alternatives like WooCommerce.

Since Stripe was designed with online sellers in mind, it can connect to virtually any type of website, online sales platform, or ecommerce platform. And with over 98 apps to enhance the payment process, it’s only with Stripe that you’re going to truly be able to scale your online shop.

Stripe and WordPress/WooCommerce

Stripe doesn’t have an official WordPress plugin or integration. But there are plenty of plugin developers in the WordPress community who have made integrating Stripe into a WordPress site a cinch.

Here are some common ways to set up Stripe for WordPress:

Square

Square is the only payment gateway with a free online store feature that automatically connects to Square payments. It is also the only option that partners with an ecommerce platform (Weebly) and delivers Square payments with the platform for people to use.

Square is meant to be an omnichannel solution that includes ecommerce functionality. And while you can’t customize as many things as Stripe allows, Square is both beginner-friendly enough for anyone to use and advanced enough that developers or large corporations can take advantage of it as well.

Square integrates with Wix, Weebly, Ecwid, BigCommerce, and 3dcart for those just starting out. And for those that need more, Square works well with Drupal, WooCommerce, Magento, and custom-built websites.

Square and WordPress/WooCommerce

Square boasts an easy integration into your existing WordPress.com website. To get started, all you have to do is have a premium Business WordPress.com plan (starting at $25/month) and use any Square-supported ecommerce plugins for WordPress such as WooCommerce or WP EasyCart.

If you have a self-hosted WordPress.org website, you can also integrate Square into your online shop, much like you would with Stripe. For example, WooCommerce Square will give you the best way to sync inventory and product data between WooCommerce and the Square POS.

In the end, if you’re a multichannel seller, Square wins. If you’re an online-only business, Stripe wins because it accepts more payment types and supports more currencies.

Winner: Stripe

Cons

  • Many complain about slow email response times and other customer support issues.
  • Chargebacks not settled by Stripe and cost money if you lose the dispute.
  • Steep learning curve for those with limited technical knowledge.
  • Not suitable for high-risk businesses.

Square

Pros

  • Very user-friendly especially.
  • Perfect for those looking for an omnichannel payment solution.
  • Ideal for low-volume merchants.
  • Very competitive pricing, including Chargeback Protection.
  • Unique ecommerce solutions.

Cons

  • Lots of complaints about terminated accounts without notice.
  • Lack of features, specifically subscription tools.
  • Not suitable for high-risk businesses.
  • Pricey for large companies doing a lot of business.

Stripe vs Square, Which One Is Better?

Because the payment gateways are so similar until they’re not, it’s tough to call out a clear winner when it comes to Stripe vs Square:

  • If you need the flexibility to sell online and in-person, Square wins by far with its omnichannel features.
  • If you need a strictly online solution that can scale globally or a standalone invoice/payment collection solution, Stripe gets the number one spot.

Summary

Choosing the right payment gateway is not an easy choice. And with Stripe vs Square being such a close call, it’s going to come down to individual features to help you make your final decision.

If you’re new to running an online store and have limited technical knowledge, Square is going to be the better option. It’s priced competitively when compared to Stripe and comes with an easy setup process and beginner-friendly documentation to guide you.

However, those in search of a more customized checkout process, Stripe is going to be your best route. If you run an ecommerce shop that relies on volume, you’re going to need every feature you can get to expand your business and secure more sales. This means a global reach, access to 24/7 support, and the flexibility to add the Stripe payment gateway to any website or platform you choose with ease.

Hedge fund that bet against GameStop shuts down

A London-based hedge fund that suffered losses betting against US retailer GameStop during the first meme stock rally in January is shutting its doors.

White Square Capital, run by former Paulson & Co trader Florian Kronawitter, told investors that it would shut its main fund and return capital this month after a review of its business model, according to people familiar with the fund and a letter to investors.

White Square, which at its peak managed about $440m in assets, had bet against GameStop, say people familiar with its positioning, and suffered double-digit per cent losses in January.

The move marks one of the first closures of a hedge fund hit by the huge surges in so-called meme stocks. Retail investors, often co-ordinating their actions on online forums such as Reddit’s r/WallStreetBets and in some cases deliberately targeting hedge fund short sellers, drove up the price of stocks such as GameStop and cinema chain AMC Entertainment in January and again in recent weeks. GameStop, for instance, soared from less than $20 at the start of the year to more than $480 at its January peak.

That led to big losses for some funds, including US-based Melvin Capital, run by Steve Cohen protégé Gabe Plotkin, and Light Street Capital, run by Glen Kacher, a former Tiger cub who worked at Julian Robertson’s Tiger Management. However, the funds remain in operation, and shortly after its losses Melvin received a $2.75bn investment from Cohen’s Point72 Asset Management and Ken Griffin’s Citadel.

“The decision to close down is related to thinking the equity long-short model is challenged,” said Kronawitter.

“There are way too many fish in the pond with the same strategy of long-short,” he added. “The traditional edge is being arbed away [eroded by other investors], there’s an oversupply of capital.”

A person close to the fund said the decision to shut was unrelated to the meme stock rally. The fund quickly rebounded in the wake of January’s turmoil and made back “a fair share” of the losses, the person added.

Among other funds hit, Melvin was still down about 44.7 per cent this year to the end of last month, while Light Street was down about 20.1 per cent.

Kronawitter, who previously worked at US billionaire John Paulson’s hedge fund and Merrill Lynch, had made double-digit gains at White Square in 2015 and 2016, said a person who had seen the numbers, while last year it made about 19 per cent.

In the investor letter announcing the fund’s closure, White Square said that last year, despite that year’s strong performance, two large investors had opted to withdraw their cash and put it in cheap passive funds or private equity. “We experienced first-hand the shift in trend away from hedge fund investing to cheaper alternatives,” it added.

According to the letter, White Square had been due to receive investor inflows again in May this year, but instead decided to shut the fund.

“The arbitrage opportunities have diminished with both the onslaught of capital caused by central bank monetary interventions, as well as much improved dissemination of information, bringing up the question to what degree the same fees can be justified,” it said.

Square competitors

Square is the all-in-one merchant services powerhouse that fits our changing world. As we noted in our Square review, the company’s vast array of small business services includes mobile processing, industry-specific POS systems, eCommerce processing, invoicing, and much more. Factor in the inexpensive hardware, lack of monthly fees, pay-as-you-go pricing without contracts, and numerous third-party integrations, and you’ve got a payments solution fit for local mom-and-pop shops, quick-serve cafes and restaurants, online merchants, and many others.

Square’s Services At A Glance

However, Square isn’t right for everybody. Many merchants and entrepreneurs will need what Square can’t provide: better pricing at high volumes, better account stability, or an even more robust feature set.

Square’s “something for everybody” approach means that few (if any) providers will have everything Square offers. That’s why we’re highlighting aspects of various Square alternatives that compare favorably with what Square provides. Read on to learn about our favorite Square competitors in terms of POS, payment processing, and mobile card readers.

Do You Need A Square Alternative?

Square takes a jack-of-all-trades approach with its merchant services, offering a mobile POS system, payment processing, and a plethora of other business tools. Accordingly, Square suits a wide variety of small business types, but once your business really starts growing, your needs will evolve. At that point, you may need more from your POS provider and/or payment processor than what Square provides.

Let’s look at the business circumstances that may require switching to one of the Square competitors in this post.

  • Your business is adding locations and/or expanding its inventory. As your business grows, you may need a POS system with more sophisticated inventory management capabilities.
  • Your sales volume increases to over $10,000 a month. As your sales volume goes up, switching to a dedicated merchant account provider can mean significantly lower processing rates.
  • You’ve switched payment processors, and you want a more sophisticated POS system.
  • You need a strong eCommerce system. While Square Online is a very solid eCommerce solution, it isn’t the best fit for high-volume merchants.

Square VS The Competition: In-Depth Comparisons

It would be impossible to list all the differences between Square and its main competitors in one post, so we wanted to point you toward our more specialized comparison articles.

  • Our Square vs. merchant accounts article goes into great depth in explaining how third-party processors such as Square differ from the dedicated merchant accounts provided by many Square alternatives.
  • PayPal may be Square’s primary competitor in terms of all-in-one merchants services for small businesses and new entrepreneurs. Read our Square vs. PayPal article to see how these two titans of processing and POS compare with each other.
  • eCommerce giant Shopify offers a number of services that overlap with what Square offers. Our Square vs. Shopify piece details the similarities and differences between the two.

We’ve written several other pieces comparing Square to some of its other alternatives. While these competitors aren’t as varied in their offerings as Square, some businesses may be better served by their more specialized services.

The 5 Best Square POS Alternatives

Square offers a very capable free POS along with more specialized POS systems for specific industries. However, there are Square alternatives that may be a better POS fit for your business. In the following section, we’ll explore some of these Square POS competitors.

1. Lightspeed Retail

Pros

  • More advanced retail POS feature set than Square
  • You can use it with a desktop, laptop, or iPad setup
  • Onboarding support provided
  • You can choose your payment processor

Cons

  • Steeper learning curve than Square
  • Costly for smaller businesses

If you have a growing retail store, you might be ready to upgrade from Square to a fully-featured POS system that includes advanced features, such as multitender options, advanced inventory management, CRM, purchase orders, and eCommerce integration. Though the $60/month/location Square for Retail is a solid POS, there are more advanced alternatives to Square POS out there, including Lightspeed Retail. (Lightspeed also offers a great restaurant POS system.)

Starting at $69/month, Lightspeed Retail is a cutting-edge mobile POS system that, in addition to iPads, can also run on a web browser from a desktop, laptop, Mac, or any other internet-connected device. When compared to Lightspeed, Square for Retail has a more pared-down feature set and is iPad-exclusive. And while Lightspeed includes in-house payment processing at the same rate Square charges, it also integrates with some other merchant accounts. You’ll face a steeper learning curve with Lightspeed POS than with Square, however.

2. SumUp: Square Reader Alternative

Pros

  • The SumUp Plus reader accepts tapped, dipped, swiped, and PIN payments
  • The SumUp Plus reader costs $19, cheaper than Square’s equivalent readers
  • Ideal for low-volume businesses

Cons

  • Limited features
  • Account stability issues

Third-party processor SumUp doesn’t have as many features as Square, but if you just need a basic mPOS, you probably won’t miss those bells and whistles. In particular, the company’s entry-level card reader, the SumUp Plus, accepts contactless, chip, swiped, and PIN payments while costing you just $19. No Square card reader gives you this kind of versatility in accepting payments, so if you’re looking for Square reader alternatives, give SumUp a look. However, SumUp is a third-party processor, so it is subject to the same account stability issues as Square.

Some of SumUp’s useful features include “quick sale” mode, refunds, tipping, cash reporting, item library, item variants, and multiple tax rates. What’s more, SumUp’s flat processing rate of 2.75% means that for smaller transactions, you’ll save on processing over Square.

3. ShopKeep

Pros

  • Free plan available
  • Interchange-plus pricing means potential cost savings over Square for Restaurants
  • A robust foodservice feature set
  • Can use ShopKeep or an outside merchant account for payment processing

For cafes and quick-service restaurants looking to upgrade to an iPad POS, ShopKeep offers a great foodservice feature set. If you qualify for the free plan, you may end up spending a lot less compared to Square POS software and with more features to boot. ShopKeep offers its paid plans via personalized quotes. And with custom interchange-plus pricing for payment processing, you’ll likely get a better rate for processing small-ticket items than you would with Square (ShopKeep also integrates with outside merchant accounts).

ShopKeep’s excellent inventory tracking features include raw goods tracking, low-stock alerts, profitability reporting, and more. The app also makes it easy to send orders to the kitchen as well as split and merge tickets as needed. Plus, the ShopKeep system automatically syncs and updates tickets on every register. Also, ShopKeep’s retail features make it suitable for businesses that sell both food and non-food products. See our ShopKeep vs. Square post for a more in-depth comparison.

4. CDGcommerce

Pros

  • Offers three different POS systems and the stability of a merchant account
  • Offers different pricing plans based on your sales volume
  • No binding contract or termination fee

Cons

  • Only available with US merchants

If you’ve been using Square but are now ready for a merchant account, CDGcommerce is an excellent provider of online merchant accounts and can address all of your sales channels, from eCommerce to retail POS to mobile sales. Regarding POS, CDGcommerce offers three different POS systems: PastePay Cloud (offers customer relationship management), Vital (offers integrated inventory management), and Echo (tablet-based).

With three different POS systems, CDGcommerce offers something for just about any brick-and-mortar merchant while providing the stability of a dedicated merchant account with month-to-month contracts and no monthly minimums, setup fee, gateway fee, or PCI compliance fee. Over time, a CDGcommerce account will save you a lot of money over apps like Square. As for mobile compatibility, CDGcommerce offers a free iPhone/Android app and the Walker 2.0, which is compatible with Android and Apple, for $65 per device.

5. Clover POS

Pros

  • Free plan available
  • Numerous feature integrations in the app store
  • Easy to set up

Cons

  • It can only be used with Fiserv merchant accounts

Clover POS is unique in that it is offered by countless merchant services providers (though it always uses Fiserv as its back-end processor). That means processing fees and hardware costs will depend on the provider you get it from. If you buy directly from Clover.com, however, you’ll pay the same per-transaction fees as you will with Square (under the lower-end plans, at least).

The similarities mostly end there, however. While Clover offers a pared-down plan with no monthly fee, most Clover plans involve a monthly fee for each device, and the equipment on offer ranges from $99 for the Clover Go mobile card reader to $1,649 for the Clover Station Duo. But while Clover’s equipment is more expensive than that of Square, Clover’s software is so adaptable and customizable (with the help of Clover’s extensive app marketplace) that it can suit businesses of just about any type and size. It’s also known for being very easy to use. Sadly, customer support can be inconsistent.

6. Shopify Lite

Pros

  • Lower processing rates than Square for transactions under $100
  • Strong feature set
  • Inexpensive card readers
  • Easy to scale

Cons

  • Same account stability issues as Square

The fact that eCommerce giant Shopify felt the need to develop its own proprietary POS tells you just how important the ability to sell across multiple channels is becoming. Shopify’s “Lite” plan gives you eCommerce “buy” buttons, a Facebook store, and an mPOS for iOS and Android, all for a very reasonable $9/month.

In addition to the monthly fee, you’ll pay 2.7% for in-person transactions and 2.9% + $0.30 for online purchases (same as Square) through Shopify Payments. However, we’re focusing on POS here, and Shopify’s in-person processing fees are better than Square’s if your average transaction is less than $100. What’s more, you can get a Bluetooth-enabled chip/swipe card reader for just $29, and a charging dock will be included for free. Shopify’s tap & chip reader goes for $49.

Best Square Alternatives For Payments & Mobile Readers

Now that we’ve gone through some Square POS alternatives, let’s take a look at a few Square payment competitors to see which processors might give you a leg up over Square. We’ll also examine a few Square reader alternatives for those looking to take payments on the go.

1. Helcim: Square Credit Card Processing Alternative

Helcim is now available with NO MONTHLY FEE. Start Here!

Pros

  • No monthly account fees or long-term contracts
  • Excellent customer support
  • Accepts international payments
  • Processing costs decrease with volume

Cons

  • Not cost-effective for low-volume businesses
  • The card reader is relatively pricey

Helcim’s cost-plus pricing structure benefits growing businesses. Merchants making more than $25K/month will see their rates begin to decline, so merchants in growth mode (or those who already process higher volumes) will see increased savings over the likes of Square.

As for Helcim’s mPOS, the company’s mobile card reader ($199 per unit) accepts PIN payments as well as NFC contactless payments (such as Apple Pay) and is fully EMV-compliant to take credit cards securely. And for those with an eCommerce presence, Helcim offers international currency conversion and a fully-hosted online shop. You won’t pay extra for the hosting, and you can customize given templates or utilize extensive developer tools to create something entirely custom.

2. PayPal Zettle: Square Reader Alternative

Pros

  • Accepts contactless, chip, and PIN payments
  • Cheaper and more versatile than Square’s contactless/chip reader
  • Ideal for lower-volume merchants
  • Lower in-person processing fees than Square

Cons

  • Same account stability issues as Square
  • Poor customer support
  • Not ideal for high-volume merchants

PayPal is Square’s biggest competitor when it comes to mobile payments. Through PayPal Zettle, the company now offers its Zettle Reader 2 for just $29 for the first reader ($79 for each subsequent one). As an alternative to Square’s card reader, it has the advantage of being cheaper than Square’s tap & chip reader and more capable with its ability to take PIN payments. What’s more, PayPal’s in-person processing rate of 2.29% + $0.09 is lower than that of Square. Of course, being a third-party processor, PayPal presents the same account stability issues as Square.

paypal zettle

With no monthly fee and its integration with PayPal’s existing merchant services suite, PayPal Zettle and its sleek new card reader is a solid option for low-volume merchants. And if you want a full POS system, Zettle offers four different Store Kit options ranging in price from $249 to $699. Each kit includes a Zettle Reader 2 and some combination of a dock, an iPad stand, a Smart Printer, thermal rolls for the printer, and a barcode scanner. Each accessory is also available separately, along with a cash drawer.

3. Payment Depot & SwipeSimple: Square Credit Card Processing Alternative

Pros

  • A dedicated merchant account gives you more account stability than Square does
  • Feature-rich payment app
  • Free chip card reader
  • Same processing rate as Square

Cons

  • Costly for low-volume businesses

For merchants looking for a stable Square alternative without the Square account stability issues, Payment Depot’s Mobile Plan (via SwipeSimple) is an excellent option. Payment processing costs are the same as Square’s, and the provider also offers comparable features and great customer service. You’ll pay $10/month, but you’ll get your own merchant account and the account stability that comes with it. (SwipeSimple is offered by other merchant service providers as well, but we prefer Payment Depot’s rates and terms for this app.)

Though the SwipeSimple feature set is a little more basic than Square’s, you still get features such as basic inventory management, SMS/email receipts, offline mode, sales reporting, a customer database, and a virtual terminal. You can use this mobile register on iOS and Android with a free chip card reader. It also supports external hardware, including Star Micronics’ mPOP with an integrated cash drawer and receipt printer. And if you process more than $10,000/month, look into a higher-volume plan with Payment Depot. You’ll pay a higher monthly fee, but your transaction fees will be lower.

Square Competitors To Avoid

Believe it or not, you have even more options when it comes to payment processing! We recommend a few more under certain circumstances, but these didn’t quite make the cut for this list.

  • QuickBooks GoPayments: We like QuickBooks GoPayments for its ease of use and predictable flat-rate pricing. It’s a great option for QuickBooks users who want something simple that seamlessly works with their accounting software. However, because QuickBooks GoPayments has limited features on its own, we recommend this option for those who already use QuickBooks for their accounting needs.
  • Stripe:Stripe is an eCommerce-focused third-party processor with great reporting tools, subscription features, and is ideal for international merchants with its multicurrency support. However, we’re focusing on POS in this article, and Stripe’s POS feature set doesn’t quite match up with that of Square, and you’ll face the same account stability issues with Stripe as with Square.
  • PayAnywhere:PayAnywhere is another third-party processor that combines some great features with pricing suited to low-volume merchants. Unfortunately, PayAnywhere offers tiered pricing for businesses that process over 10K, which we don’t like for several reasons. The company also has a history of customer support complaints.
  • Upserve POS:Upserve POS (formerly Breadcrumb) is a solid restaurant-focused POS that has a number of great features and which works on both iOS and Android devices. However, while it may suit some foodservice businesses, it doesn’t quite provide enough bang for your buck for us to recommend it as a Square POS alternative.

Which Alternative To Square Is Right For Your Business?

While Square is a great fit for many small businesses and entrepreneurs, there are plenty of good reasons to consider competitors to Square. Whether you want a cheaper credit card processor, advanced POS features, better account stability, or something else, sometimes Square just doesn’t fit the bill.

Fortunately, you’ll find many other POS apps on the market that your business can use to take payments on mobile devices. When deciding between the various Square competitors, here are a few questions to consider to get you started:

  • Do I need a more stable account provider?
  • Do I process enough card transactions to benefit from high-volume savings?
  • Does this Square alternative have all the features I need?
  • Is the cost of any add-ons justifiable?

Have you used Square and/or one of its alternatives? If so, drop us a comment and let us know all about it!

4 Top Alternatives to Zillow and Trulia

Zillow Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: Z), is a popular online real estate company founded in 2006. Zillow operates as a real estate search engine that lists more than 110 million homes across the United States. It also offers a value estimate known as the "Zestimate," along with comparables for each of the homes listed on the site. Zillow is considered by many analysts to truly be a media company that makes its money from its ad placements.

Trulia, Inc., like Zillow, is another online residential real estate website that connects home sellers with buyers, renters, and real estate professionals in the United States. With a business model similar to Zillow’s, Trulia was acquired by Zillow Group in 2015 for $3.5 billion.

Key Takeaways

  • Zillow Group, which includes Zillow and Trulia, is the biggest online real estate company in the U.S.
  • HomeSnap is known for its user-friendly mobile app, while NeighborhoodScout provides additional information about an area, such as crime rates and school data.
  • One of the best ways to conduct a search for a new home is to use several real estate websites to cull information.

The resulting entity is considered the largest online real estate company operating in the United States with the most popular website, measured by the number of unique monthly visits it racks up—59 million, as of January 2020. While an entity as large as Zillow Group provides its users with benefits of scale, its market domination means it hasn't felt the need to adopt some features of some of the smaller competitors in the space.

Many online real estate websites have cropped up to try to dethrone Zillow Group as an industry leader. The following are four options that provide alternatives to Zillow and its subsidiary, Trulia.

1. Redfin

Redfin is a large online real estate company that seeks to redesign the way people buy homes. It offers several benefits that make it a viable alternative to Zillow and Trulia. The Redfin app, available on iOS and Android, claims to update its data every five minutes.

On Oct. 29, 2020, several fair housing organizations filed suit against Redfin, accusing the company of systematic racial discrimination. The complaint says the online real estate broker offers fewer services to homebuyers and sellers in minority communities. Housing discrimination is illegal, but it does persist today and you can fight against it.

First, the user interface and site design are very similar to Zillow's and Trulia's, allowing users can search for properties through a map-based function. After searching the site with a city or zip code, Redfin displays information—home value, home appreciation, square footage, year built, homeowner’s association fees, construction components, sewage system specifics, and other housing data points—that a home buyer might want to know. Also, users who are browsing for homes can find favorite units for a side-by-side comparison.

Second, Redfin offers additional features that Zillow and Trulia do not. The company, which began as a real estate broker, employs a team of real estate agents who are rated by Redfin users. The compensation of these real estate agents is directly correlated to the ratings they receive. To help home buyers, the company also rebates part of the real estate commission back to the purchaser.

However, users should be aware that in some cities Redfin does not disclose exact addresses if sellers prefer to keep them hidden, and the site does not automatically provide home value data if the listing agent chooses not to have it displayed. In other cities, Redfin does automatically provides complete sales and listing data.

Finally, while the full data might not always be there, the company integrates with the multiple listing services (MLS) and has homes listed within 15 minutes of the unit going into MLS.

2. Homesnap

Homesnap is an online real estate platform that includes features such as an intuitive map-based search function and a robust amount of property information. Much like Zillow and Trulia, its real estate browse function is easy to use.

What sets Homesnap apart from the competition is its mobile app. With the app, it is possible to take a real-time picture of a house that is for sale with a mobile device and have the app query all the necessary listing information about the property.

The mobile app even works on unlisted homes, apartments, and condos, giving users property values of places currently off the market. The app is available for Android, iPhone, Apple Watch, and Apple TV users.

Many online real estate websites are portals that get their information from databases of properties shared by agents and brokers. As a brokerage, Redfin is an exception.

3. NeighborhoodScout

NeighborhoodScout provides users with information regarding neighborhoods in the United States. Users can access the company’s neighborhood information using the search function by entering a city or specific address. Once the search criteria are entered, NeighborhoodScout provides average house values, local school information, demographic data, crime rates, traffic data, and more.

While most of this information is free for users, a subscription is needed for some of the more robust data. With plans starting at $39.99 per month, users are provided with detailed school reports, crime rates, and housing appreciation rates.

The information given to users through NeighborhoodScout’s subscription service is currently not offered by either Zillow or Trulia, making it a viable alternative to either company.

4. Realtor.com

Realtor.com is an online real estate website owned by News Corp. (It licenses the name "realtor" from the National Association of Realtors.) While the information is current, the site is more basic and doesn't have the robust features of Zillow, Trulia, or the other companies on this list.

However, it's connected to MLS with the most current listings on the market and is a good place to start searching for a home. It also has a texting option to connect to real estate professionals and a pricing feature to assess how specific home features, such as a garage, affect cost.

Once a home listing is found, a user can employ a blended strategy to search for that home on one of the three websites listed previously. This way it's possible to be the most informed about a listing, so a buyer can be the first to view the property on Redfin, Homesnap, or NeighborhoodScout, then contact the realtor quickly.

The Bottom Line

While Zillow and Trulia are popular real estate sites, excellent alternatives do exist. Buying a home is one of the biggest financial decisions you will likely make, so it’s important to pull information from a variety of reputable sources. In addition to the above-mentioned sites, Investopedia also offers a complete guide to buying a home that can help make the search easier.
