Switch your washing machine door to the other side

Open your washer door

If your washer door's in the way, it's no big deal to change it over. Just note that switching your washer door to the other side only works on select front-load models. I used the Electrolux EFLW427UIW for this tutorial. The steps may vary slightly from machine to machine, so consult your owner's manual.

First, turn off and unplug your washing machine. Open the washer door all the way to show the four hinge screws.

Remove the hinge screws

Take off the four hinge screws with a No. 2 square bit driver (save them, you'll need them later). This is the only tool you'll need for the entire process.

Don't have a No. 2 square bit driver? Find them on Amazon or in your local hardware store.

Remove the terminal cap from the hinge plate

Hold the door and slowly pull it away from the washer. Slide out the black plastic terminal cap from the door's hinge plate to separate the door from the wires connecting it to the rest of the washer.

Set the washer door on a towel or other protected surface while you complete the rest of the steps.

Press down on the tab on the yellow wiring harness and separate it from the black terminal cap.

Remove the door lock screws

Remove and save the two screws on the other side of the washer opening (the door lock side) using the same No. 2 square bit driver.

Slowly pull the lock out through the opening. Again, don't pull it too far, as it's still connected to a wiring harness.

Switch the hole cover to the other side of the washer

Pull up on the hole cover on the side of the washer where the door used to lock. Move it to the other side, to cover up the hole where the hinge used to attach.

Reverse it

Grab the door lock, move it to the other side of the washer and connect the yellow wiring harness to the door lock.

Feed the door lock into the washer panel and install it with two of the screws you set aside earlier.

Remember the washer door you set aside? Remove the nine screws on the inside of the door. Save them for a later step.

Lift up the inner door section from the rest of the washer door and set it aside.

You're done!

Test out the door to make sure it opens and closes correctly. Run a partial test wash to make sure the door lock engages and doesn't open midcycle.

It may seem like a lot of steps, but it's actually really straightforward and simple. Just take your time and make sure you have a No. 2 bit driver.

Electrolux washer door reversal

Exactly what the manual says, but when you get it in your hand it does not make any sense. There is some mention of pins on the hinge which I am guessing help to position it in its mount. Push where? How hard? Which direction? The hinge seems like it is fairly rugged and made of cast pot metal. I have a sense it might slide up such that the fitment is what holds actually supports it, the screws simply keep it snugly in position. When the screws are removed, the hinge barely moves and I gave it as much a push, a pull, a tug this way and that way, all to no avail. I am sure that if someone has taken one of these off, it is going to be an embarrassingly simple procedure. Since I got the one to be returned, I might do a bit more 'experimenting' on it. I will be sure to post the how when I figure it out. This has now become a quest! Not to mention with my hook ups etc, the washer location has the standard door side going the wrong way.

How to Replace Your Electrolux Washer’s Door Hinge to Keep the Door Sealed

When you have a front-loading washer, the washer’s door hinge is put under a lot of stress. If the hinge is cracked or you notice the door hanging crookedly, don’t risk a leak by waiting. Buy a replacement hinge (134550800 for Electrolux models) and follow these steps to replace it.

1. Unplug the washer.

This repair doesn’t involve any electrical repairs. But it’s always safer to unplug an appliance before you start making any repairs.

2. Remove the door.

In order to access the hinge, you need to remove the entire door from the appliance. Loosen and remove the three screws holding the door bracket against the body of the machine. Then lift the door up to slide the back mounting tabs out of the slots

the door interior side up on a flat work surface.

3. Dismantle the door to remove the old door hinge.

First, remove the screws around the circumference of the door interior. Next, lift the door’s inner frame up. Set it to the side. Pick up the door hinge and set it aside.

4. Install the new hinge and reassemble the door.

Line the new hinge up with the cutouts and mounting tabs in the panel. Press down to lock it into place. Next, put the inner door frame back on the door. Line it up with the screw holes and snap the locking tabs into place. Rethread and tighten the screws. Also reattach the strike plate with the two screws.

5. Reattach the door to the washer.

Slide the door’s mounting tabs down into the cutouts on the side of the washer frame. Line the hinge bracket up, flush with the side of the washer, and resecure it with the screws

Make sure the door opens and shuts smoothly, and then plug the washer back in
