faux leather coin purses made with cricut maker

It’s easy to make a coin purse that also works as a card holder or headphone holder. Use my free template to make a faux leather coin purse with Cricut maker. There’s no sewing needed!

These small pouches are perfect to make to hold change, money, business cards, credit cards and headphones for your cell phone.

You could even use one of these pouches to store pills. This works best for pills in a foil sleeve, such as allergy medication.

This simply DIY project is perfect to make to sell at craft fairs, or give as gifts!

I used faux leather, which is cheaper and comes in a lot more fun patterns and colors compared to real leather.

You could use the same leather to make these easy DIY cord keepers. They use the same materials to make!

How to Make a Faux Leather Coin Purse and Headphones Holder with Cricut

Supplies

Instructions

Step 1

Open Design Space and click upload. Then upload my Coin Purse SVG file by finding the file on your computer and then click “Upload Image.”

Select cut image.

Click “Make it” and follow the prompts.

You will want to put your faux leather with the pretty side down. Make sure you are using these settings on Cricut Maker:

Step 2

Remove the coin purse template from the Cricut Maker. Punch out the holes that were cut.

Now it’s time to attach the snaps. Snaps have two parts and within those two parts are two pieces. I have labeled them A and B and show them below.

Start with snap “A.” Place the long piece of the snap hardware through the faux leather, with the post coming up through the pretty side of the leather.

This will be on the part of the template that doesn’t have flaps on the sides.

Place the other piece of Snap A on top of the post.

You will need to use a concave tool to hammer the snap to secure it. Or, many snap kits come with pliers that press that snaps into place. Either tool will be effective, depending on the snap kit that you have.

Place it over the top of the snap and then gently hammer until it is snug against the leather.

Step 3

To attach Snap B, you will place the long piece through the leather template, with the post sticking out of the “wrong” side of the fabric. This snap should be on the part of the template that has flaps on the sides.

Then, add the second piece of Snap B over it.

For this one you will need the point tool so you can hammer the long piece until it is flush with the leather.

Step 4

Fold it over and lightly crease the folds on the sides. You will want to bend them so that they wrap around in the back and get a little crease going before you glue.

The flaps should be folded so that they are flush against the edge of the coin purse in the back.

Add glue to the wrong side of the faux leather flap.

Fold the flap towards the back so that it is snug against the edge of the pouch. Clamp it into place to allow the glue to dry. Repeat on the other side.

I am having so much fun with my Cricut Maker!  Everyday, it seems, I dream of things to make and patterns to create.

Card Wallet-4

Last night, I got home from work and immediately started working on designing a pattern for these cuties that the Cricut Maker could cut out for me.  It was super easy, and the fact that the Cricut Maker not only cut out my fabric and interfacing, but also drew my seam allowances, made making these super easy – even for a beginner sewist, like me!

Card Wallet-10

These are the perfect size for business cards or credit cards.  I love using small wallets like this for a quick run to the grocery or after school sport events.

Card Wallet-15

I added a keyring so that you could easily clip your car keys or even a lobster clasp could be added to clip it to a backpack or purse.

I used Heat N Bond Fusible Extra Firm interfacing to create the perfect firmness to these little gems.

The fun fabrics are from a Pioneer Woman Placemat (top left $3.47 from Walmart), Fabric Editions (top right and lower left – $0.97 from Walmart) and some fabric from my scraps bin from Riley Blake (lower right).

Wanna make one?  Guess what?  I’ve got a tutorial for you!

Create a Pattern and Card Wallet with Cricut Maker

One of the things I’ve really been wanting to try was making a wallet with the Cricut Maker. A few days ago I began scouring the internet for patterns. I wanted something free and simple to try things out. When I came across the MakeSupply company’s website, I was pretty much in business. They offer free templates you can download and even videos on putting them together. I downloaded a Bi-Fold wallet template, converted it from PDF to SVG images, and uploaded it to the Cricut app.

faux leather on cricut maker

I have real leather to work with but I pulled out some faux leather instead. This is my first wallet, after all, I didn’t want to waste more expensive materials. Faux leather is pretty thin and the machine easily cuts through it with perfect cuts.

sewing faux leather wallet

I watched their tutorial for basic assembly instructions and took all my pieces to the sewing machine. The faux leather material will easily go through my sewing machine and I’m pretty sure it’s more than powerful enough to handle real leather as well. I’ll find out for sure once I’m ready to dive into the real stuff later.

different size layers

I’m used to working with things pretty flat when I sew. The one interesting part of making a wallet is that you have to make your inside pieces smaller than the outside to account for the bends in your wallet. With this thin material I didn’t need to leave so much space, but I wanted to stay true to the pattern before I started making my own modifications.

open wallet showing gap in layers

When the wallet is opened you’ll notice the gap between the two pieces. I guess when I think back to all the wallets I’ve had I remember seeing the hole in the bottom and sometimes it was hidden with a liner, but I never really considered why it was there.

closed wallet showing gap in layers

Once the wallet is closed the gap collapses to almost nothing. If this was a thick real leather, there probably wouldn’t be much space left at all.

After a few zips through the sewing machine, the wallet was put together. I shoved some cards and money into it to make sure everything was sized correctly (and, of course, to Instagram it) and it came out perfectly!

Yesterday, I got the new knife blade for the Cricut and I plan on making some templates with thicker materials. Stay tuned!

Step 1

First, click here for the design in Cricut® Design Space™.

Step 2

Now, click ‘Make It’ in the upper right corner and then click ‘Continue’ in the lower right corner of your screen.

Step 3

In the preview screen, click the ‘Mirror’ feature in the left panel for the mat that shows the continents to reverse your image, then click ‘Continue’ in the lower right corner.

Step 4

Place your iron-on foil material, shiny down, onto your cutting mat and load it into your Cricut® machine. Select ‘Foil Iron-On’ as your material and follow the prompts to cut out your design. Once the machine has finished cutting, gently peel the material away from your mat.

Step 5

Now, place a sheet of genuine leather, face down, onto your strong grip cutting mat. Change the material to ‘Genuine Leather’ and install your deep blade housing into clamp B. Load your mat and follow the prompts to cut out the base of your passport holder.

Step 6

Once the machine has finished cutting, gently peel the material away from your mat; then repeat Step 5 with a second sheet of genuine leather for the inside pockets of your passport holder.

Step 7

Use scissors to cut your design away from the foil iron-on roll. Next, use your weeder tool to remove all the excess material around and inside your design. You’ll be left with just the reversed design on the clear plastic carrier sheets, which are slightly sticky.

Step 8

Preheat your EasyPress™ to the appropriate temperature for your material and, if needed, adjust the timer.

TIP: See the Quick Reference Guide, included with your EasyPress™, for temperature and times or click here for an interactive guide. You can also use an iron to press your material. Just follow the instructions included in the iron-on material packaging.

Step 9

Place the genuine leather base of your passport holder, right side up, on top of your EasyPress™ mat and then preheat the fabric for 5 seconds.

Step 10

Place the carrier sheet with your design, so it’s sticky-side down, onto your leather.

Step 11

Place your EasyPress™ on top of the design, apply the appropriate pressure for your material and press the time button. Allow your material to cool, then gently peel away the carrier sheet.

Step 12

Slide a bottom piece of a button stud set through the small hole along the side of the leather base. Screw the top knob piece into the bottom piece.

TIP: If needed, make four even small snips in the circle cut on the closure flap. The fit should be tight.

Step 13

Turn over the leather base so the rough side is facing up on your working surface.

Step 14

Run a line of leather cement down the center of one of the inside pocket pieces, on the rough side. Now, run a line of leather cement around side and bottom edges of the pocket piece. Turn it over onto the rough side of the base where the top edge is about an inch down from the top edge of the base. Press firmly.

TIP: Clean up any excess glue that may seep out from the edges.

Step 15
Repeat Steps 13-14 with the second inside pocket piece but align the bottom and side edges of this piece with the side and bottom edges of the base. Let dry.

  2. Once you’ve sized the design let the Cricut do the work! Just don’t forget to mirror your image.
  3. Now, preheat your EasyPress to the recommended heat settings. The settings are different depending on the material you’re using and what you’re using it on.
  4. Once it’s done being cut weed your design very carefully. Since the design is so small there’s more room for error in weeding so make sure you take your time.

Load the mat and leather into the machine by clicking on the flashing “C” button.

Step 6:

Using Cricut Deep-Point Blade to Cut Leather

Go back to Design Space. Click on “Browse all materials” and then choose “Genuine Leather” for your setting. Load up the Cricut Deep Cut blade and then cut out your design.

Step 7:

How to cut Leather with a Cricut Maker

Check the cut was successful before unloading the mat. If you are happy to unload the mat and carefully remove your pieces from the cutting mat.

Step 9:

Before you forget, make sure to re-adjust those white star wheels so that they are ready and in position for your next project.

Step 10:

Make your own leather wallet with cricut maker

Next, you will need to fold your wallet. I read that you should be wetting the leather, folding it up and then letting it dry in that shape. However, I'm impatient, so I used my brayer and rolled it over the folds instead.

If you want to be more official, here is a great tutorial on how to wet your leather for folding.

How to make a no-stitch leather wallet

Once folded, I used my Cricut pen to gently trace around the flap. It was the only way to figure out how much glue I would need.

Step 11:

Glue your flaps together to create the envelope shape for your wallet or pouch. I didn't want to buy special glue for my leather, but I probably would suggest that you do so.

Some people recommended using a hot glue gun, but it didn't work for me. In actual fact it was so crappy that I can pull it straight off the leather once it had cooled, it was also way too thick and lumpy for the project.

Handmade Leather Wallet

I used glue that I had on hand and it did work really well. Whichever glue you end up using, ensure that it is a quick-dry glue and that dries clear and also has a strong bond.

I simply placed my EasyPress on top of the wallet whilst I waited for all my bits to dry. You can use anything that is heavy.

Step 12:

Next, design or upload the iron-on design that you wish to use. I purchase the valentine fox here and grab the vine leaves here.

Measure out the area on the wallet that you want your design to fill.

Step 13:

Next click on “Make It”.

Remember to mirror-flip your image seeing as we are working with iron-on vinyl. Select your vinyl from the material list and ensure that your standard blade is installed and ready to go.

Place your HTV FACE DOWN on the cutting mat and load it up.

There are loads of different types of vinyl on the market. You can find out what the best iron-on vinyl is in our guide here. I typically prefer to use Siser HTV vinyl, but for this project, I really loved the elegant feel of the Cricut Foil Iron-On range.

Step 14:

How to add vinyl to leather

Next, is the weeding of course. Here is our tutorial on how to weed vinyl if this process is new to you.

Step 15:

HTV on Leather

Open your leather wallet. Place the flap on a Cricut heat mat. Place your design on the wallet. Place some baking paper over the design – I'm not too sure if this is needed but I thought it best to protect my leather from the heat of the heat press.

Step 16:

heat transfer vinyl on leather

Heat up your Cricut EasyPress or Heat Press Machine. Check the temperature and time settings for your specific type of HTV Vinyl.

When your heat press is ready, press your design for 30 seconds on the front, and then another 15 seconds on the back. Please make sure to check out whether the design has properly melded with the fibres of the leather.

If you are happy, wait for the design to cool down as you should cold peel your Foil HTV.

Step 17:

Slip your leather tie through the cut slits and tie it up in a knot.

Custom Foldable Genuine Leather Wallet

I gave this wallet to my daughter and was worried about her ability to tie the strip (because it felt a bit short for me). So I have chosen to not use the slits in the wallet and instead just tied the strip around the wallet. That way she can easily slip the tie strip off the wallet and pop it back on without having to untie and retie – bonus!
