It is too early to tell when the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4000 series cards will release and what it will bring.

But, it is known that it is in development and it is anticipated to release in 2022.

Of course, this article will be updated if there are any changes in the future. Until then, the GPUs from the RTX 3000 series are more than enough to provide you with a great gaming experience. If you can get your hands on one, that is.

The last GPU lineup of NVIDIA was released back in Q4 of 2020, the RTX 3000 series. The performance jump from the previous generation of GPUs, the RTX 2000 series to this new Ampere architecture was quite welcome. The 3070 and 3080 were almost over 30% faster than their predecessors while also coming at a cheaper price. A win-win situation for all consumers.

However, it is still quite hard to justify an upgrade from RTX 2070 to RTX 3070. For many, this can be seen as a waste of money. On account of that, all of those people are probably waiting for the next big thing coming from NVIDIA (maybe even AMD).

And the next big thing is the RTX 4000 Series.

Release Date


Currently, there is no official information about the release date of the next NVIDIA GPU lineup. It is probably still too early even for the company itself to know for sure when the next big release is going to come. So, what do we do know?

Well, there is definitely something in the works. Taking Nvidia’s GPU history and the pattern of their GPU releases into consideration, the RTX 4000 series is most definitely already in development.

Still, it is also quite clear that there will not be any releases of the Lovelace architecture in 2021. Especially after the 2021 GTC Keynote with Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang where he shared about their future architecture plans.

This time around, Nvidia’s next architecture was labeled as Ampere Next which is destined to release in 2022, that’s for certain. By 2024 they believe they’ll have Ampere Next Next ready which is the supposed RTX 5000 series.

It makes sense that it is still early for RTX 4000 considering the release of the 3070Ti and a 3080Ti.

But wait, Nvidia plans more!

There are also talks about an RTX 3000 Super series about to release before the end of 2021 or at the beginning of 2022.

The leak above by kopite7kimi shows the specs of the entire lineup. An increase in CUDA cores, VRAM memory, and an upgrade to GDDR6X from GDDR6 non-X.

The 3060S gets an upgrade to 12GB VRAM. This was expected as the 3060Ti had only 6GB while the 3060 non-Ti had 12GB.

The 3080S also a bump to 12GB VRAM, but that’s expected especially since the 3080Ti already got that treatment.

Unfortunately, the 3070S seems to be stuck with just 8GB. It’s probably not worth it for Nvidia to push the 3070 to 16GB VRAM. However, there have also been some leaks claiming that there could be a new version of the 3070 Ti with 16GB of VRAM.

These new releases are important to mention because it shows us that Nvidia already has its hands full with Ampere. This means that the RTX 4000 series is destined for late 2022.

Fortunately, there have been some reports/leaks that an earlier release of Lovelace is possible. Not a 2021 release, but at least earlier 2022 compared to the Q4 2022 release everyone speculated.

This is all based on kopite7kimi, a known hardware leaker. Greymon55, another known leaker also claims that all next-gen GPUs will be released by October 2022.


How To Overclock GPU

As mentioned previously, no official info is available for the RTX 4000 series, but there have been some rumors and leaks. All is concrete information right now is that the codename for the architecture is Ada Lovelace.

The Ada Lovelace microarchitecture will be on a 5nm fabrication process which is a pretty big leap from the 8nm Ampere (Samsung) chips. A smaller microarchitecture can mean two things. Delivering a lot more performance while using a lot less power.

With a 5nm microarchitecture, Nvidia can increase the size of the chip while also considerably increasing the number of transistors.

Leaks are suggesting an increase of more than 7500 CUDA cores over the GA102 (3090, 3080) chip. Almost doubleGPC – Graphics Processing Clusters, from 7 to 12 and 30 moreTPC – Texture Processing Clusters. For those uninitiated, this is a huge bump in specifications, considering that the Ampere chip had an increase of just 1 GPC over the Turing 102 chip.

Too early to guess the power usage of Ada Lovelace, but most signs show towards higher TGP, TBP, and TDP. Whether this means up to 400W or even up 500W we do not know.

Allegedly, AD102’s target frequency is 2.2GHz which is theoretically around 81 TFLOPS (FP32). That is more than double compared to Ampere’s flagship (RTX 3090). A good sign.


With the info we currently have, it is impossible to guess what the pricing will look like. However, considering that AMD’sRX 6000 series is on par with the RTX 3000 series in terms of performance (in some cases better), Nvidia will most probably stick with the same pricing as Ampere.

Around 330$ for the 4060, $500 for the 4070, $700 for the 4080 and we’ll see about the 4090 or Titan. Those two would most definitely be over $1000.

Unfortunately, there have been talks that this jump to 5nm from TSMC could be a lot more expensive than we expected. The previously mentioned twitter leak by kopite7kimi was a response to nerdtechgasm’s suggesting that 5nm Nvidia is going to be expensive for us consumers.

Scalping & Price Increases

If you have been on the lookout for a new graphics card for your system, you’ve probably been disappointed several times. GPUs that should cost $500 can be found on retail stores such as Amazon or Newegg for more than $1000. The $700 RTX 3080 is continuously being sold for $1500 on second-hand markets by scalpers.

This kind of scalping is possible because of the global shortage of semiconductor chips in 2021. At the time of writing, the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturers, TSMCand Samsungare currently struggling to keep up with demand.

When this situation is bound to improve, we cannot know. The shortage is expected to last all throughout 2021 and even through 2022.

Right now, you might be wondering: Will this kind of scalping affect the RTX 4000 series?

This is a great question and quite concerning one too. Fortunately, TSMC has already started its investments to grow its manufacturing capacities. Samsung too is planning to build a new chip manufacturing factory in the US.

There are also some rumors that the USA is planning to invest $37 billion in the chip-making industry.

Rumored Nvidia RTX 4000 Series Could Be Out By ‘October 2022'

It looks as though the next generation of graphics cards may be coming soon, as rumors suggest the next Nvidia series is in development.

It looks as though Nvidia is about to enter the next generation. Given that the RTX 3090 was launched in September 2020, it means a whole year has passed since a new GPU was launched by the company. While the tech world is still experiencing shortages, it has not stopped the big conglomerates from making announcements and pushing products. Now it looks as though the next series of graphics cards may be in development and ready for launch next year.

A number of sources speculate that Nvidia is already beginning work on its RTX 4000 series, with a possible release date of "next October," as well as the RTX 30 Super refresh cards coming "early 2022." The rumor states that the next GPU will be codenamed "Lovelace," but it seems as though, at least according to a tweet from a user called Greymon55, that the October release window could be referring to the next generation of graphics cards in general, and not specifically the RTX 4000 products.

While rumors of the Nvidia "Lovelace" have been flying around for a little while now, this is the first time that a potential release date has been mentioned. A few months back, it was suggested by Greymon55 that the up-and-coming hardware would likely be using the TSSC 5nm process nodes. For some perspective on that, Nvidia's 3000 series uses Samsung's 8nm, while AMD's 6000 series uses a TSMC 7nm. Outside these vague details, not much is known about what the next generation of Nvidia RTX cards will be like in terms of performance or specifics.

Of course, it's worth saying at this stage that these are just rumors. There has been no official word yet from Nvidia about its possible 4000 series. However, if true, it's possible that Nvidia will be looking to release three SKUs for the October period, which sources label as AD102, AD104, and AD106. Rumors of AMD developing its RX 6900 XTX could be why its rival company may be getting ready to push out new versions of its 30 series, and why there are talks of the next generation of graphics cards doing the rounds.

On top of that, both AMD and Nvidia will have to compete with a new combatant entering the GPU ring. A few weeks ago, Intel announced it would be launching its own range of graphics cards that could rival the other two heavyweights. Whether or not it will be able to keep up with the next generation of tech remains to be seen.

The GeForce 4 series (codenames below) refers to the fourth generation of GeForce-branded graphics processing units (GPUs) manufactured by Nvidia. There are two different GeForce4 families, the high-performance Ti family, and the budget MX family. The MX family spawned a mostly identical GeForce4 Go (NV17M) family for the laptop market. All three families were announced in early 2002; members within each family were differentiated by core and memory clock speeds. In late 2002, there was an attempt to form a fourth family, also for the laptop market, the only member of it being the GeForce4 4200 Go (NV28M) which was derived from the Ti line.

The GeForce4 Ti (NV25) was launched in February 2002[1] and was a revision of the GeForce 3 (NV20). It was very similar to its predecessor; the main differences were higher core and memory clock rates, a revised memory controller (known as Lightspeed Memory Architecture II), updated pixel shaders with new instructions for Direct3D 8.0a support,[2][3] an additional vertex shader (the vertex and pixel shaders were now known as nFinite FX Engine II), hardware anti-aliasing (Accuview AA), and DVD playback.[1] Legacy Direct3D 7-class fixed-function T&L was now implemented as vertex shaders.[2] Proper dual-monitor support (TwinView) was also brought over from the GeForce 2 MX.[4] The GeForce 4 Ti was superior to the GeForce 4 MX in virtually every aspect save for production cost, although the MX had the Nvidia VPE (video processing engine) which the Ti lacked.


The initial two models were the Ti4400 and the top-of-the-range Ti4600. At the time of their introduction, Nvidia's main products were the entry-level GeForce 2 MX, the midrange GeForce4 MX models (released the same time as the Ti4400 and Ti4600), and the older but still high-performance GeForce 3 (demoted to the upper mid-range or performance niche).[1] However, ATI's Radeon 8500LE was somewhat cheaper than the Ti4400, and outperformed its price competitors, the GeForce 3 Ti200 and GeForce4 MX 460.[citation needed] The GeForce 3 Ti500 filled the performance gap between the Ti200 and the Ti4400 but it could not be produced cheap enough to compete with the Radeon 8500.[citation needed]

In consequence, Nvidia rolled out a slightly cheaper model: the Ti4200. Although the 4200 was initially supposed to be part of the launch of the GeForce4 line, Nvidia had delayed its release to sell off the soon-to-be discontinued GeForce 3 chips.[5] In an attempt to prevent the Ti4200 damaging the Ti4400's sales, Nvidia set the Ti4200's memory speed at 222 MHz on the models with a 128 MiB frame buffer—a full 53 MHz slower than the Ti4400 (all of which had 128 MiB frame buffers). Models with a 64 MiB frame buffer were set to 250 MHz memory speed. This tactic didn't work however, for two reasons. Firstly, the Ti4400 was perceived as being not good enough for those who wanted top performance (who preferred the Ti4600), nor those who wanted good value for money (who typically chose the Ti4200), causing the Ti4400 to be a pointless middle ground of the two.[citation needed] Furthermore, some graphics card makers simply ignored Nvidia's guidelines for the Ti4200, and set the memory speed at 250 MHz on the 128 MiB models anyway.[citation needed]

Then in late 2002, the NV25 core was replaced by the NV28 core, which differed only by addition of AGP-8X support. The Ti4200 with AGP-8X support was based on this chip, and sold as the Ti4200-8X. A Ti4800SE replaced the Ti4400 and a Ti4800 replaced the Ti4600 respectively when the 8X AGP NV28 core was introduced on these.[6][7]

The only mobile derivative of the Ti series was the GeForce4 4200 Go (NV28M), launched in late 2002.[8] The solution featured the same feature-set and similar performance compared to the NV28-based Ti4200, although the mobile variant was clocked lower. It outperformed the Mobility Radeon 9000 by a large margin, as well as being Nvidia's first DirectX 8 laptop graphics solution. However, because the GPU was not designed for the mobile space, it had thermal output similar to the desktop part. The 4200 Go also lacked power-saving circuitry like the MX-based GeForce4 4x0 Go series or the Mobility Radeon 9000. This caused problems for notebook manufacturers, especially with regards to battery life.[9]


The GeForce4 Ti outperformed the older GeForce 3 by a significant margin.[1] The competing ATIRadeon 8500 was generally faster than the GeForce 3 line, but was overshadowed by the GeForce 4 Ti in every area other than price and more advanced pixel shader (1.4) support.[1] Nvidia, however, missed a chance to dominate the upper-range/performance segment by delaying the release of the Ti4200 and by not rolling out 128 MiB models quickly enough; otherwise the Ti4200 was cheaper and faster than the previous top-line GeForce 3 and Radeon 8500.[citation needed] Besides the late introduction of the Ti4200, the limited release 128 MiB models of the GeForce 3 Ti200 proved unimpressive, letting the Radeon 8500LE and even the full 8500 dominated the upper-range performance for a while.[10] The Matrox Parhelia, despite having several DirectX 9.0 capabilities and other innovative features, was at most competitive with the GeForce 3 and GeForce 4 Ti 4200, but it was priced the same as the Ti 4600 at US$399.

The GeForce 4 Ti4200 enjoyed considerable longevity compared to its higher-clocked peers. At half the cost of the 4600, the 4200 remained the best balance between price and performance until the launch of the ATI Radeon 9500 Pro at the end of 2002.[11] The Ti4200 still managed to hold its own against several next generation DirectX 9 chips released in late 2003, outperforming the GeForce FX 5200 and the midrange FX 5600, and performing similarly to the mid-range Radeon 9600 Pro in some situations.[12][13]

GeForce4 MX[edit]


many criticized the GeForce 4 MX name as a misleading marketing ploy since it was less advanced than the preceding GeForce 3.[citation needed] In the features comparison chart between the Ti and MX lines, it showed that the only "feature" that was missing on the MX was the nfiniteFX II engine—the DirectX 8 programmable vertex and pixel shaders.[14] However, the GeForce4 MX was not a GeForce4 Ti with the shader hardware removed, as the MX's performance in games that did not use shaders was considerably behind the GeForce 4 Ti and GeForce 3.[citation needed]

Though its lineage was of the past-generation GeForce 2, the GeForce4 MX did incorporate bandwidth and fill rate-saving techniques, dual-monitor support, and a multi-sampling anti-aliasing unit from the Ti series; the improved 128-bit DDR memory controller was crucial to solving the bandwidth limitations that plagued the GeForce 256 and GeForce 2 lines. It also owed some of its design heritage to Nvidia's high-end CAD products, and in performance-critical non-game applications it was remarkably effective. The most notable example is AutoCAD, in which the GeForce4 MX returned results within a single-digit percentage of GeForce4 Ti cards several times the price.

Despite harsh criticism by gaming enthusiasts, the GeForce4 MX was a market success. Priced about 30% above the GeForce 2 MX, it provided better performance, the ability to play a number of popular games that the GeForce 2 could not run well—above all else—to the average non-specialist it sounded as if it were a "real" GeForce4—i.e., a GeForce4 Ti.[citation needed] GeForce 4 MX was particularly successful in the PC OEM market, and rapidly replaced the GeForce 2 MX as the best-selling GPU.

In motion-video applications, the GeForce4 MX offered new functionality. It (and not the GeForce4 Ti) was the first GeForce member to feature the Nvidia VPE (video processing engine). It was also the first GeForce to offer hardware-iDCT and VLC (variable length code) decoding, making VPE a major upgrade from Nvidia's previous HDVP. In the application of MPEG-2 playback, VPE could finally compete head-to-head with ATI's video engine.


There were 3 initial models: the MX420, the MX440 and the MX460. The MX420 had only Single Data Rate memory and was designed for very low end PCs, replacing the GeForce 2 MX100 and MX200. The GeForce 4 MX440 was a mass-market OEM solution, replacing the GeForce 2 MX/MX400 and GeForce 2 Ti. The GeForce 4 MX460 was initially meant to slot in between the MX440 and the Ti4400, but the late addition of the Ti4200 to the line at a very similar price point (combined with the existing GeForce 3 Ti200 and ATI's Radeon 8500LE/9100, which were also similarly priced) prevented the MX460 from ever being truly competitive, and the model soon faded away.

In terms of 3D performance, the MX420 performed only slightly better than the GeForce 2 MX400 and below the GeForce 2 GTS, but this was never really much of a problem, considering its target audience. The nearest thing to a direct competitor the MX420 had was ATI's Radeon 7000. In practice its main competitors were chipset-integrated graphics solutions, such as Intel's 845G and Nvidia's own nForce 2, but its main advantage over those was multiple-monitor support; Intel's solutions did not have this at all, and the nForce 2's multi-monitor support was much inferior to what the MX series offered.

The MX440 performed reasonably well for its intended audience, outperforming its closest competitor, the ATI Radeon 7500, as well as the discontinued GeForce 2 Ti and Ultra. When ATI launched its Radeon 9000 Pro in September 2002, it performed about the same as the MX440, but had crucial advantages with better single-texturing performance and proper support of DirectX 8 shaders. However, the 9000 was unable to break the MX440's entrenched hold on the OEM market. Nvidia's eventual answer to the Radeon 9000 was the GeForce FX 5200, but despite the 5200's DirectX 9 features it did not have a significant performance increase compared to the MX440 even in DirectX 7.0 games. This kept the MX440 in production while the 5200 was discontinued.[citation needed]

The GeForce4 Go was derived from the MX line and it was announced along with the rest of the GeForce4 lineup in early 2002. There was the 420 Go, 440 Go, and 460 Go. However, ATI had beaten them to the market with the similarly performing Mobility Radeon 7500, and later the DirectX 8.0 compliant Mobility Radeon 9000. (Despite its name, the short-lived 4200 Go is not part of this lineup, it was instead derived from the Ti line.)

Like the Ti series, the MX was also updated in late 2002 to support AGP-8X with the NV18 core. The two new models were the MX440-8X, which was clocked slightly faster than the original MX440, and the MX440SE, which had a narrower memory bus, and was intended as a replacement of sorts for the MX420. The MX460, which had been discontinued by this point, was never replaced. Another variant followed in late 2003—the MX 4000, which was a GeForce4 MX440SE with a slightly higher memory clock.

The GeForce4 MX line received a third and final update in 2004, with the PCX 4300, which was functionally equivalent to the MX 4000 but with support for PCI Express. In spite of its new codename (NV19), the PCX 4300 was in fact simply an NV18 core with a BR02 chip bridging the NV18's native AGP interface with the PCI-Express bus.

GeForce4 Go driver support[edit]

This family is a derivative of the GeForce4 MX family, produced for the laptop market. The GeForce4 Go family, performance wise, can be considered comparable to the MX line.

One possible solution to the lack of driver support for the Go family is the third party Omega Drivers. Using third party drivers can, among other things, invalidate warranties. The Omega Drivers are supported by neither laptop manufacturers, laptop ODMs, nor by Nvidia. Nvidia attempted legal action against a version of Omega Drivers that included the Nvidia logo.[15]

Discontinued support[edit]

Nvidia has ceased driver support for GeForce 4 series.

Nvidia’s RTX 4000 GPUs promise a huge performance leap – but AMD RDNA 3 might outdo them

Nvidia’s ‘Lovelace’ next-gen graphics cards, which will presumably end up being the RTX 4000 range, could represent a massive generational leap in performance, similar to what we saw from Maxwell to Pascal.

In other words, we could be looking at a performance increase along the lines of that ushered in by the GTX 1080 Ti (and Pascal siblings), a card that we called “crazy-powerful” at the time, and for that matter, one which has stood the test of time well as a result (this GPU still holds up reasonably well today, in fact, as long as you’re not looking to push too hard).

We need to be extra cautious about this prediction for RTX 4000 graphics cards, though, given that the hardware leaker (spotted by Wccftech), a certain Ulysses, isn’t one of the known denizens of Twitter that we commonly see hardware rumors filtering down from (the account is relatively new).

At any rate, bucketful of salt in hand, there are several pieces of speculation here aside from the Maxwell to Pascal performance jump comparison, including that Lovelace boost clocks will hit around the 2.2GHz to 2.5GHz mark, a big hike compared to the current RTX 3000 series.

Furthermore, Nvidia’s Lovelace cards – which we’ve already heard could be due at the end of 2022 – are supposedly likely to arrive at the very close of next year, meaning December, or they could possibly even slip to the first quarter of 2023.

Given that, this makes another tweet that Ulysses just aired even more potentially interesting, namely that “navi31 maybe beat ad102”, or in other words, AMD’s next-gen (possibly RX 7900) flagship will outdo Nvidia’s Lovelace top dog. Although the ‘maybe’ is obviously quite telling, and unsurprising at this point, as we are still in the relatively early stages of development for both AMD and Nvidia here.

Analysis: It’s looking like a heated next-gen GPU race

We have to be extra skeptical here, as mentioned, but a generational leap akin to that made with Pascal graphics cards is clearly a potential prospect that will get gamers excited. It hints at a Lovelace flagship with a considerably cranked clock speed and blazing performance, which is in line with other recent nuggets from the grapevine suggesting that Nvidia might use an enhanced 5nm process (TSMC) with cards packing up to 18,432 CUDA cores.

The further suggestion that AMD’s next-generation could best this, though, is likely to cause even more of a stir, although that tweet sounds very tentative. With Team Red purportedly looking at an MCM or multi-chip module design, meaning the flagship of the RX 7000 range could use a pair of GPUs, again a big step up in performance wouldn’t be a surprise – and these graphics cards could sneak in at the end of 2022, possibly getting the jump on the RTX 4000 series if Ulysses is right on the ‘early 2023 for Lovelace’ front.

Note that we’ve even heard whispers that Nvidia may adopt an MCM design itself, of course. Realistically, we’re still very early in the rumor peddling here, but there are signals starting to come through regarding some seriously powerful next-gen graphics cards from both major players (with Intel waiting in the wings too).

That’s the good news from a raw grunt perspective, but the slightly more worrying aspect is what kind of price tags we might be looking at for these GPUs, particularly when it comes to higher-end models – and also how much power they might demand. Because if the rumor mill is right on the latter score, both Lovelace and RDNA 3 could be serious Watt guzzlers indeed, which again makes some sense looking at these predicted performance gains. In short, there may be a stiff price to pay for these monster GPUs (and that could even include a power supply upgrade).
