Vail Valley: Longtime guides buy Lakota River Guides

Karl Borski and John Mark Seelig, two longtime Vail Valley river guides with a combined 25 years of local rafting experience, have purchased Lakota River Guides, and are already making some changes.

The biggest is a new boathouse, but the new owners are also running some early-season specials, including Dowd Chute special for locals and a new “River Pass” for $199. The pass allows the holder to take five trips of their choosing. Pass holders can invite up to three friends per trip, who will get 20 percent off the retail price of that trip.

Borski and Seelig will also continue Lakota’s trips for public school students and youth specials through the Western Eagle County Metropolitan Recreation District. More local specials will be announced as summer approaches.

Several of the company’s experienced guides are returning for the season. A few have even come out of semi-retirement.

“I guess they like us,” Borksi said. “But guides are key. A boatman can get you down the river but a guide shows you the river. It’s a different experience.”

Seelig said he and Borski are committed to a great experience for customers.

“We’re guides ourselves so we know what works for safety and fun,” Seelig said. “You will feel safe and you will have fun ” without those we have no business.” smiled Seelig.
