Complete, utter, total piece of shit. Unless you love this everytime you use it, because the geniuses that sent it to you packaged opposing threaded parts. I would have paid 5x it's value to never had it introduced into my life.

Are you going to increase the length of the spool shaft and at first glance it looks like it will work great for my fly fishing reels, am I correct? I have been looking for something like this because it will save some time changing out fly lines.

Correctly Spooling Fishing Line On Baitcasting and Spinning Reels

Spooling fishing line on you reels correctly will save you many headaches when your on the water.

If you spool line on your bass fishing reels incorrectly, especially your spinning reel, twists and loops that are created while winding on line will cause you major heartburn later when you're fishing. Fishing line memory will result in line twist, casting problems and valuable "fishing time" taken up messing with backlashes.

So the question is how to spool fishing line the "correct" way using fishing line spoolers or by putting the filler spool on the floor.

Spinning Reels

There are more potential problems related to spooling fishing line on spinning reels than baitcasters so let's look at how to spool fishing line on them first.

Step One - make sure you're spooling fishing line on your reel in the right direction.

Important Point!

A critical consideration when spooling fishing line on a spinning reel is to insure that the line goes on your reel the same way it was spooled on the manufacturers filler spool.

Line is usually, though not always, spooled on a spinning reel in a clockwise direction. The direction in which your reel winds line is easy to determine. Merely look at the front of the reel as you turn the reel's handle. Observe the direction the bail arm turns. If it turns in a clockwise direction it places line on the spool in a clockwise direction. So it is very important to have line coming off the filler spool onto your reel in a clockwise direction.

How do you make sure this is what's happening?

  • Check your filler spool "with the label facing you and free line end at the top of the spool". Often the line is secured with a piece of tape so look for that.
  • Determine the direction the free tag end points. If the tag end is pointing to your left the line will come off the spool clockwise.
  • Place the plastic filler spool on the ground face up.

Step Two - tie line on the reel spool.

  • Run some line from the filler spool to the reel down through the three or four rod guides in front of the reel.
  • Make sure either (1) your bail is open or (2) you thread the line under the bail arm if you keep it closed.
  • Put a loop of line around your spool.
  • Tie your line securely on the reel using one of the following: Arbor knot (preferred)Uni-knot
  • Close the bail if open.

Step Three - test for loops and twists in your line.

  • Turn your reel handle six or eight times and stop.
  • If the line has loops or twists in it flip the filler spool over and continue winding.

The line should appear slightly undulating as it runs through the guides. There must not be any twists or loops hanging from the rod as seen above

Step Four - wind on line

  • Make sure there is "tension" on the line as you wind it onto your reel's spool.
  • lightly pinch the line between your index finger and thumb at a point above the reel but before the first guide.
  • alternatively, hold a rag soaked in a silicone lubricant like Real Magic and wind the line through it (this helps limber up monofilament line).
  • fill your spool to a level no more than 1/8" below the rim of the reel.

Baitcasting Reels

Spooling fishing line on a baitcasting reel is quite simple compared to a spinning reel. When adding or changing fishing line on a baitcaster follow these steps.

  • Run some line from the filler spool down through the rod guides to the reel.
  • Run the line through the level-wind device.
  • Put a loop of line around your spool.
  • Tie your line securely on the reel using one of the following: Arbor knot(preferred, see below)Uni-knot

Wind the line on your reel while maintaining tension on the line. This can be done by

  • putting a pencil, pen etc through the hole off the filler spool and having someone hold it while you wind on line, or
  • by using a fishing line winder device (there are several)

Fishing line spoolers like the one I use shown above is from Berkley. It is quick and simple to use. There are others available which fasten to the rod shaft or stick to table tops with suction cups that are much more portable.

When Spooling Fishing Line Where And How Do You Tie An Arbor Knot?

Step One:

Wrap line around your spool in a clockwise direction and tie an overhand knot around the standing line. Run the tag end through it.

Step Two:

Tie another overhand knot in the tag end as close to the first knot as possible and pull it tight.

Step Three:

Slide the completed knot down to the reel spool so it fits snugly against the spool. Cut off the tag.

Fishing line spooling is one of those little things which deserve your focused attention. Do it wrong and you can easily ruin a good day on the water fooling with line twist and birds nests.

How To Spool A Baitcaster - Reduce Line Twists, Backlashes

Spooling A Baitcaster Made Easy – Step By Step Guide

Photo of baitcasting reel being filled with line

UPDATED 29 JANUARY 2021

by Robert Ceran

If you’ve never done it before, spooling a baitcaster can seem a little daunting at first. But once you know how to do it correctly, it’s really easy and you’ll be done in no time at all.

How to spool a baitcaster

Summary of how to put fishing line on a baitcasting reel in 7 steps.

  1. Attach baitcasting reel to your baitcasting rod
  2. Feed line through the first eye of the rod
  3. Feed line through the line guide of the baitcaster
  4. Tie line to spool of the baitcasting reel
  5. Trim off line end from the knot
  6. Start spooling line on to the reel by turning the handle
  7. Fill spool until there’s a 1/8th inch gap left at the edge of the spool

This process applies if you’re using monofilament or fluorocarbon to fill your baitcaster. If you’re using braid instead, check our modified guide further down the page.

Before you start, it’s a good idea to familiarise yourself with the baitcaster parts, which are quite different from the parts of a spinning reel.

Here is each step in more detail:

1. Attach your baitcaster to a rod

Some people use a line spooler to put line on a baitcaster, but this isn’t really necessary, as you can achieve the same effect by using a rod instead.

2. Feed line through the first guide of the rod

This will help to run the line towards your baitcaster from the right direction, and help you to apply tension to it during the process.

3. Feed line through the line guide of the reel

This is essential, as the line guide moves from side to side while you spool, thus ensuring the line is filled evenly on to the spool.

4. Tie the line to the spool of your reel

If your baitcaster reel has holes in its spool, you can thread the line through two of the holes and then tie it down with a double overhand knot. If the spool doesn’t have holes, wrap the line around the spool and tie it down with a double overhand knot.

5. Trim off the end of the line

This is important because you don’t want the end to stick out and get in the way of the main line during the spooling process.

6. Start spooling the baitcaster by turning the handle

Start spooling the baitcaster, and keep tension on the line while you do this. In order to avoid line twisting, make sure that the filler spool rotates in the same direction as the spool on your baitcasting reel.

7. Spool the baitcaster until it’s almost full

Don’t fill the baitcaster completely – leave a 1/8th inch gap between the edge of the spool and the line. This helps to prevent backlash.

How to spool a baitcaster by yourself

If you don’t have a buddy available to hold the filler spool for you, you can also achieve this on your own by putting a pencil through the hole of the filler spool, and stepping on one end of the pencil with one foot, while resting the other end of the pencil on top of your other foot. That way the spool can rotate freely as you pull the line off it onto the reel.

In addition, run the line through your fingers before it reaches the reel, to apply tension consistently during the spooling process.

How to spool a baitcaster with braid

This process is similar to the one we outlined above, but instead of filling the baitcaster spool only with braided line, you’ll start by filling it with a monofilament backing.

How much backing do you need for a baitcaster?

Aim to fill 1/4th of your baitcaster spool with backing line. This line at the base of the spool almost never comes into use.

The reason for using backing is twofold: first of all, monofilament is a lot cheaper than braid, and secondly, braid slips too much when tied directly to the spool, while mono tends to stick firmly without slippage.

How do you spool a baitcaster backing?

In order to put backing on your baitcaster, start the spooling process with monofilament exactly as outlined above, until you’ve filled your baitcasting reel about 1/4th of the way. Then cut the monofilament line, and tie it to the braid with an Albright knot.

Once the knot is tied firmly and cinched down, trim off the ends, and continue to string the baitcaster until it’s almost full, leaving a 1/8th inch gap.

Best line for baitcaster

Since we’ve shown you how to spool a baitcaster with 3 different types of lines, you might be wondering, “what’s the best line for baitcasting reels?”

There’s no simple answer to this question, as all 3 line types can perform well for baitcasting, depending on the exact application you’re planning to use.

See also: when should you respool a fishing reel?

If you’re a beginner, it’s best to start with monofilament, because it has less backlash tendency compared to fluorocarbon and braid (in addition to being cheaper).

Here are the main advantages and disadvantages of each type:

Braid: strongest line type with zero stretch. Ideal for setting the hook at a distance, and for cranking big fish away from cover before they can snag the line. But much higher visibility than the other two types.

Monofilament: Lower visibility than braid, and easier to cast with on a baitcaster since it generates less backlash. Floats on top of the water, which is great for topwater lures. But has high elasticity, which can be a problem for setting the hook.

Fluorocarbon: Sinks and is virtually invisible, which is handy in clear water. But a lot more expensive than mono, and tends to generate more backlash on a baitcasting reel.

Hopefully, these tips will help you to choose the best line for your purpose.

If you’re interested in finesse applications, then mono and fluoro are the best choice of line.

Conclusion

This concludes our step by step guide on spooling a baitcaster correctly, which is is the first step to avoid baitcaster backlash.

Spooler baitcaster line

When the fish are biting and the action is non-stop, one of the worst things to occur for any fisherman is line trouble. Backlash, line twists and other fishing line dilemmas can put the brakes on any angler’s outing. Luckily, a number of these problems can be avoided or lessened by properly spooling your fishing reel in advance.

Spooling a baitcasting reel might seem intimidating at first, but by using these fishing Pro Tips you’ll see that the process is nothing to fear.

EQUIPMENT LIST

To effectively add new line to your baitcasting reel, you’ll need a few fishing supplies:

If you find yourself one fishing buddy shy of a full gear list, fear not. You can always employ a fishing line spooler to achieve a full baitcasting reel.

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTION

With supplies in tow, you can now begin to spool your baitcasting reel. DICK’S Sporting Goods Associate Justin Lonchar states that the first step in this process should be to attach your reel to your fishing rod. “Next, you’ll want to feed the line through the first eyelet of the rod,” he says.

Once your fishing line is through the first eyelet, you can then attach it to your reel spool. Lonchar notes that you should feed the line through the worm guide at the front of the reel.

Next, you’ll want to wrap the line around the spool and tie an overhand knot around the main line.  Finish by tying an overhand knot on the tag end and by pulling on the main line until both knots tighten down on the spool.  This is also called an arbor knot.

After trimming the tag end, you can begin spooling your reel. This is where your friend will come in to help. Take your pencil through the hole of the packaged filler spool and have them hold your line vertically, like a tire on an axle. Place some tension on the line and begin to reel and fill up the spool. If you don’t have a friend available, use your fishing line spooler to house the filler spool as you reel.

To prevent line twists and future casting problems, you should want your fishing line to come off its filler spool the same way it goes onto your baitcaster reel. Since your reel spool feeds at the bottom of its turn, you want your filler spool to feed off the top. A good tip is to think of a cassette tape; as one reel loses tape, the other fills up.

Continue spooling your reel until it’s almost full of line.

“Ideally, you’ll want to leave one- eighth of an inch from the edge of the spool,” Lonchar says. “This will allow for smooth casting.”

Lastly, trim your spooled line from its package spool and thread through the remaining eyelets on your rod.

SPOOLING BRAIDED LINE

Braided fishing line is a popular option for fishermen due to its virtually stretch-free design and impressive strength-to-diameter ratio. Braided line is rather slick, however, which can lead to drag problems, backlash and line slippage on the spool. To combat this, it’s recommended that you use a monofilament backing prior to spooling your reel with braided line.

Begin your backing by feeding monofilament fishing line through the worm guide and tying it to the spool. Spool a couple of turns until you have a clean layer across your spool. The mono helps in creating friction on the braided line, allowing for better performance out of the reel.

To combine your braided and mono lines, “Grab your braid and connect to the monofilament by double-uni knot,” says Lonchar.

For more information on how to tie a double-uni knot, be sure to check out these fishing Pro Tips.

Once your lines are conjoined, begin spooling your braided line onto your reel as normal, leaving roughly one-eighth of an inch before the spool lip.

BONUS PRO TIP: For more information on braided line and other fishing line options, be sure to read up on the Three Best Fishing Lines for Bass Fishing.

Spool your reels correctly

I’ve been thinking about something lately. It’s not the biggest thing in the world but it is important, and it comes up often enough that I think we should talk about it. Too many anglers don’t put enough line on their reels and they don’t spool them correctly. I see it often in the little bit of guiding I do these days. That tells me it’s pretty common.

The reasons anglers do that vary but two of the most common are that they think they’ll get backlashes if their baitcasting reels have too much line on them and they do it to save money. Both of these problems can be easily solved.

To begin with it’s important to fill your reels full. Casting reels should be between an eighth of an inch from the top and all the way to the top. If you get too much line on them, you’ll get a weird sound when you cast. Spinning reels should be all the way full, right to the top. If you get too much line on them, the line will jump off the spool in coils.

You can stop backlashes with baitcasters by adjusting your reels properly. Start with the Spool Tension Knob. This controls how easily your spool will rotate. The rule of thumb is to tighten it just enough so that your lure drops slowly when you release the Thumb Bar. Once you’ve done that adjust the Brakes. That’ll keep the spool from overrunning.

Make your adjustments a little tight if you’re a novice or new to baitcasting tackle. As you gain experience you can loosen them up. You want to get as much distance and accuracy with as little effort as possible. At the same time, though, you don’t want to waste valuable fishing time picking out backlashes.

A spinning reel is even easier to fix. Fill it full like I just said and you’ll be able to cast it easily without the line getting all twisted up into knots that’ll make your next cast impossible. There’s nothing difficult about it.

It’s impossible to overstate the importance of having a full spool. Neither a casting or a spinning reel will make a long cast if it doesn’t have enough line on it. If you can’t make long and accurate casts you’ll clearly be at a disadvantage against the fish and other anglers.

The money issue is even easier to solve than the backlash issue. I put monofilament or fluorocarbon backing — old line — on my reels before I spool the braid. I do this on both my casting and spinning reels. It keeps the braid from slipping and cutting into itself so much and it saves expensive line. We all know that good braid like the Seaguar I use isn’t cheap. It’s worth the cost, for sure. But there’s no reason to spend more on it than necessary.

This whole topic fits in nicely with another column I wrote about the importance of precise lure placement. In fact, that’s what got me started thinking about it in the first place and why I think it’s so important. There are a lot of variables in bass fishing. Reel performance shouldn’t be one of them.
