Higgins is an Irish family name with ancient royal connections. It is an anglicisation of O'hUigin, from the Irish word 'uiginn' meaning Viking. The original holder of the name was a grandson of Niall of the Nine Hostages, High King of Tara, and all of the O'Higgins claim a common descent from him. Ancient records show that several members of the O'Higgins claimed a hereditary right to be file or poet in the courts of the Irish Chiefs and Kings.
In medieval Ireland, the Higgins were a sept, or clan, of the southern Ui Neills, who settled in Connacht, particularly in County Sligo. Despite their Ulster roots, Higgins was primarily known as a Connacht name in the mid-19th century. Other branches were predominantly located in Meath, Westmeath, Longford, Roscommon and Leitrim. The main seats of the clan were at Dooghorne, Monteige and Ballynary in Sligo, and in Kilbeg in Westmeath.
Because of their loyalty to Gaelic culture and religion, the O'Higgins septs suffered under the English Crown in Ireland and had lost all their lands in Sligo and Westmeath by 1654. Some of them remained in Ireland as tenants on their own lands, but many of them migrated to Spain where they achieved high office in the service of the King. One of the most famous holders of the name was Bernardo O'Higgins (1778-1842), founder of the Chilean Navy and the first president of Chile. The main street in Santiago is Avenida O'Higgins - in honour of the man who gave Chile its independence from Spain. Bernardo was the son of Ambrosio O'Higgins, who came from a poor rural background near Summerhill in County Meath.
Of the O'Higgins descendants who remained in Ireland, many continued to make a contribution to Irish society and the cause for Irish freedom. The first Irish Dáil was elected in 1918 and there were two O'Higgins kinsmen in the Provisional Government of Ireland - Kevin O'Higgins and Brian O'Higgins, both of whose families came from County Meath. Brian O'Higgins' great grandfather had been involved in the 1798 Rebellion and later on Kevin O'Higgins' nephew, Tom O'Higgins, was elected to the Dáil in 1948. After an impressive political career Tom O'Higgins became Chief Justice in 1974, a post he held until 1985, when he was appointed to the EU Court of Justice, a position he held until 1991.
In 1996 surname records in Ireland, Higgins (with and without the O prefix), was the 79th most common of Irish family names.
Famous People with Higgins as their Surname
Michael D Higgins, ninth and current President of Ireland, was born on April 18, 1941 in Limerick city and was brought up in County Clare. He studied at University College Galway, the University of Manchester, and the University of Indiana. He worked as a lecturer in political science and sociology in the National University of Ireland, Galway, and in the United States before entering politics. He has served as a public representative at many levels from Councillor and Mayor, to 9 years in the Seanad and 25 in Dáil Éireann.
Michael D. Higgins has been a stalwart ambassador for human rights and the promotion of peace and democracy in Ireland and in other parts of the world. He is also a writer and poet, contributing to many books covering diverse aspects of Irish politics, sociology, history and culture. On November 11th 2011, Michael D. Higgins was inaugurated as the ninth President of Ireland.
Having announced in 2011 that he would not stand for a second term, he did so in 2018, and won on the first count with 56% of the vote. He was inaugurated on 11 November 2018

Higgins Surname Name Meaning, Origin, History, & Etymology
This is a baptismal or patronymic last name meaning “the son of Richard” from the nickname or reduced form of Richard, Hick, which was corrupted to Higg, which in the diminutive form, became Hickin. It translates to “little Richard”. A similar theory is that it meant little Hig or son of Hugh, from Hig, and the patronymic terminations ings. In Ireland, this is an Anglicized form of the Gaelic surname O’Huiginn, meaning a descendant of Uiginn, an old personal (first) name meaning “viking” or “sea rover”, deriving from the Old Norse work víkingr. One source states that O’Huigin was a sept of the southern Ui Neill that migrated to Connacht where they held land and titles. Alternatively, it can be a spelling variant of the Irish surname Hagan. Some scholars believe the name traces back to the Irish word for “knowledge”, perhaps linking the family’s early prominence as bards to the Gaelic Kings of Ireland.
In his book A Genealogical History of Irish Families, John Rooney, states the family descended from Milesius, King of Spain, from the line of Heremon, the eighth son of that monarch. This is a dubious claim, made throughout the book about several Irish families, as most historians believe Milesius is a mythological figure. The book states the following in regard to this family: “The founder of the family was Fiachra, ancestor of the Southern Hy Nials, and son of Nial the Great, or Nial of the Nine Hostages. King of Ireland, AD 379. The ancient name, Huigin, signifies “Ingenuity” or “Knowledge,” and was taken from Uigin, a chieftain of the sept. The possessions of the sept were located in the present Counties of Mayo, Galway, and Westmeath, and comprised a fertile and extensive territory. Another branch of the same sept, in the County of Mayo, was descended from Milesius through the line of his third son, neber, and belonged to the Clanna Fogartaid, from its founder Eogan, son of Olliol Ollum, King of Munster AD 177”. Many members of this family were among the first to suffer at the Anglo-Norman invaders of Ireland. The name was sometimes Anglicized to McEgan or Egan. Many members of this family left Ireland after the siege of Limerick and took refugee with their kinsmen in Spain during the reign of Queen Elizabeth of England in the 1500s, many going to South America. A one Don Ambrosio O’Higgins was a very prominent figure in Chile and did a lot to build towns, canals, harbors and trade in that nation, followed by his son who contributed to the independence of the nation.
Another source states the O’Higgins are an ancient noble Irish family who claim descent from Shean Dugg O’Higgins (born around 1600 AD), the Gaelic Baron of Ballynary, who married a daughter of the O’Conor family. They are part of the royal house of O’Neill. They held titles such as Lord of Monteige, Lord of Ballnary, Marquis of Osorno, Baron de Vallenar, Councillor of Castile, Baronet of Montoge, and Baron O’Higgins in Connacht, Spain, and France. They originated in the Kingdom of Meath and Brega. They were poets in the courts of Irish Princes and Chiefs. Because of their adherence to Gaelix religion and culture, they were persecuted under the English Crown.
Wikipedia states: “The earliest known coat of arms was recorded in 1724 by Sir John Higgins Bt of Montoge with Sir James Terry, Athlone Herald in the Court of James II at St. Germaine. To me, this suggests there were not many early colonial American settlers bearing this surname, and bearers of this name may have come to America in the eighteenth and nineteenth century when heraldry was less popular, as opposed to the seventeenth century when heraldry was more popular, although this is conjecture on my behalf.

Bryan Higgins, born in the county Sligo, about 1737, who was a distinguished physician and chemist. 2. William Higgins, also a distinguished chemist, who was a nephew of the preceding, and was born in the county Sligo. 3. Francis Higgins, who was a HighChurch clergyman, and Archdeacon of Cashel; he was born in Limerick about 1670, died in August, 1728, and was buried in St. Michael's Church, Dublin, 4. Francis Higgins, the "Sham Squire (born 1750, died in January, 1802), was a Dublin celebrity in his day. 5. Higgins is the anglicised version of an old Irish surname - O'hUigin - with ancient royal connections.
It comes from the Irish word uiginn, meaning Viking. Bearers of the old name were a sept (followers and extended family of the main 'clan') of the southern Ui Neills who, over time, migrated westwards from the midlands to the province of Connacht where they acquired a reputation as poets in the courts of the regional Irish Chiefs and Lords.
The Higgins Shop in Leighlinbridge, Co Carlow makes a pretty show in this picturesque village beside the River Barrow.The main O'Higgins bases were in Ballynary, Dooghorne and Monteige in Sligo, and in Kilbeg in Westmeath.
By 1654, however, their traditional Gaelic way of life had been brought to an unhappy end by the English crown and its armies. Nearly all their lands had been taken from them and many felt they had no choice but to go into exile. Some migrated to Spain where they were accepted as part of the European aristocracy and worked their way into high office.
Others remained in Ireland, demoted to tenants on their own land. By the time of Griffith's Valuation (an island-wide survey of property and land ownership carried out in the 1850s), most of the O'Higgins in Ireland had 'lost' their 'O'.
The figures are dramatic. Of the 1,972 Higgins households recorded at that time, only two still attached the 'O' prefix.
The main clusters of Higgins were in Galway (248 households), Mayo (242), Roscommon (178), Cork (169) and Sligo (144), and half a century later, these were still major settlement areas for the name, as you can see in the map, left, which has been created from the 1911 Census of Ireland.

In 1841 just over 6,000 individuals with the Irish surname Higgins were recorded in the censuses of England, Scotland and Wales. Over the three nations, only 9% gave their birthplace as Ireland, but in Scotland alone the figure was more than 25%.
It is likely that a fair proportion of the Higgins then in England and Wales were not descended from the Irish Higgins; Higgin was a medieval first name in England and later became a surname.

By 1891, the number of Higgins across Britain had reached 15,145. Some 2,288 of this total (15%) were residing in Lancashire, 1,789 (12%) were in London, 1010 (7%) were in Lanarkshire, and the English counties of Cheshire, Staffordshire, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Kent were home to 2,576 (17%).
The only areas where Higgins had not settled were Yorkshire's three Ridings, Durham, Brecknockshire and Merionethshire in Wales, Forfarshire (Angus) and the far north of Scotland.
By this time, Canada was home to a growing number of Higgins. Their locations in 1871, when the total population bearing this name was 1,368, is shown in the map, below. More than 200 had been born in Ireland.
The 1871 Canadian Census recorded 1,368 individuals with the Irish surname Higgins. Their numbers in the map note their areas of residence.Jumping forward to 1921's census, there were 2,393 Higgins over a much wider area of Canada. Only 60 had been born in Ireland. The oldest Irish-born was William Henry Higgins, a Baptist living at 1563 5th Avenue, East Vancouver Centre, with his much younger (Methodist) wife, Leah, and their five children.
The youngest child was just eight months old while his father - according to his paper census return - was 85 years old. Born in 1836 in Ireland, he could read and write and had emigrated to Canada in 1885.
Higgins also settled in the United States in big numbers, as you can see from the graph below. What is striking is the tiny proportion of immigrants born in Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) compared with those born on the island of Ireland, suggesting that Higgins families across the USA are more likely to have Irish heritage than England, Scottish or Welsh.
By 1964, the surname appeared in Social Security data for more than 94,100 instances, making it the 240th most common surname in the US. Just under 50 years later, nearly 80 thousand individuals were recorded in the 2010 census and the name ranked in 400th place.

From County Meath to the capital of Chile
Bernardo O'Higgins is one of the most famous descendents of those sept members who headed for Spain in the 17th century. He was the son of Ambrosio O'Higgins who came from a poor labouring family in Summerhill in County Meath. Bernardo (1778-1842) founded the Chilean Navy and was the first President of Chile. The main street in the country's capital city, Santiago, is named after him: Avenida O'Higgins.
Varients of Higgins
The Irish surname Higgins is rare for having relatively few varients. In Ireland's 1850s' land and property survey, Griffith's Valuation, only two real varients to Higgins were recorded: Higgin and O' Higgins.
There were only five instances of Higgin and just two of O'Higgins. There were 1,965 households across the island recorded as Higgins.
