A federal assistance program that helps provide food for those in need have been made available by phone in Contra Costa County during the statewide stay-at-home order declared last week by Gov. Gavin Newsom, health officials in that county said Wednesday.

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, better known as WIC, has suspended all in-person appointments until further notice, county WIC Director Raz Moghbel said in a statement. Their phone lines remain open, and food benefits can still be received within days of applying, he said.

WIC provides healthy foods and support services to families; and those who have lost income because of the COVID-19 outbreak may be eligible, Moghbel said. Pregnant mothers and those with children under five may also qualify, he said.

Those who have qualified can call local offices to enroll or certify their status and to obtain future food benefits. Those local offices include Concord (925-646-5370); Brentwood (925-513-6880); Pittsburg (925-431-2460); and San Pablo (510-942-4000).

Those who may be eligible can apply by calling 1-800-414-4WIC or by applying at cc.health.org/wic

  • this wic office is organized and fast unlike the alameda county office in hayward.  omg that hayward office was always long waits and made me miserable

  • Wic is a very helpful program. We learn so much about nutrition. Maryam is very nice and helpful for every body l hope she get promotion to match
    She is the best

  • My friends recommended me to go to WIC because I'm a single mom and it will help me get food for my baby boy.

Program is nice to have to get extra food if you are a low income family.

Just call them that you want to join. Schedule an appointment and get directions if needed. Once you are at your first appointment, they will want to see your ID and fill in papers about you and your baby. You see a person to talk to about your income and see if your eligible. They will tell you how the program is all about with a disc and show you these checks that will help you get food in your grocery market (Luckys, Safeway, etc. - they will give you a list who takes WIC).

They do have a food bank every 1st and 3rd week of the month.

Have rooms along the hall way as doctor rooms or class rooms.

Every Friday they do have a clinic day where you could get the vaccine or shots you need for them. Which my mom and I got the whopping cough shot. A lot of waiting which they could do a bit faster.

Dislike: While waiting, there are little kids walking around talking to people and wanting to say hi and touch other babies. I know they don't know much what's right and wrong until you let them know. But It's well...germy there. especially if they are sick wanting to touch your baby. But kids are kids.
