How to make TNT in Minecraft

This Minecraft tutorial explains how to craft TNT with screenshots and step-by-step instructions.

In Minecraft, TNT is one of the many building blocks that you can make.

TNT

Let's explore how to make TNT.

Supported Platforms

TNT is available in the following versions of Minecraft:

Required Materials to make TNT

In Minecraft, these are the materials you can use to craft TNT:

How to craft TNT in Survival Mode

1. Open the Crafting Menu

First, open your crafting table so that you have the 3x3 crafting grid that looks like this:

3x3 crafting area

2. Add Items to make TNT

In the crafting menu, you should see a crafting area that is made up of a 3x3 crafting grid. To make TNT, place 5 gunpowder and 4 sand in the 3x3 crafting grid.

When making TNT, it is important that the gun powder and sand are placed in the exact pattern as the image below. In the first row, there should be 1 gun powder in the first box, 1 sand in the second box, and 1 gun powder in the third box. In the second row, there should be 1 sand in the first box, 1 gun powder in the second box, and 1 sand in the third box. In the third row, there should be 1 gun powder in the first box, 1 sand in the second box, and 1 gun powder in the third box. This is the Minecraft crafting recipe for TNT.

Now that you have filled the crafting area with the correct pattern, the TNT will appear in the box to the right.

3. Move the TNT to Inventory

Once you have crafted TNT, you need to move the new item to your inventory.

Completed tnt

Congratulations, you have made TNT in Minecraft!

Things to Make with TNT

You can use TNT to make items in Minecraft such as:

Sours: https://www.digminecraft.com/block_recipes/make_tnt.php

TNT is a destructive block in Minecraft that can destroy the environment around it, and the easiest way to obtain is by crafting. To craft TNT you need 5 gunpowder and 4 sand blocks. Open the crafting table and alternate between sand and gunpowder, with the first box being gunpowder, for the entirety of the 3x3 grid. TNT will activate when it receives power from a lever, Redstone torch, button, pressure plate, or any other activator. It is also affected by gravity only after being activated and can fall about seventy blocks before it explodes. It does not destroy any blocks when surrounded by water or lava but deals damage to anything within the blast radius.

There is a specific kind of joy you can experience seeing an incredible Minecraft world and blowing it to smithereens. The explosion on its own is enough to blow a hole in the wall of your house, but with hundreds, you could potentially crash the world. Be careful when you use TNT, make sure you only use it where you want to use it.

How to get TNT in Minecraft?

The most common way to get TNT in Minecraft is to craft it yourself. TNT is made with gunpowder and sand. The easiest way to get gunpowder is to hunt down some creepers.

Minecraft Creepers

Creepers will drop 0-2 gunpowder when killed. When you have collected enough gunpowder, go to a crafting table and make an “X” of gunpowder, and fill in the spaces with sand.

Crafting TNT

This is the recipe for TNT and it will stack up to sixty-four.

TNT can be naturally generated in shipwreck chests. These generated structures at the bottom of oceans or ocean beaches can contain treasure chests. TNT is among the items you can potentially find in a shipwreck.

Shipwreck in Minecraft

Different kinds of loot chests can spawn with different categories of items. If the shipwreck contained a chest full of potatoes, coal, and various enchanted leather armor, these are the chests that can spawn with TNT.

TNT Chest

You can also find traps throughout your Minecraft world from world generation. The most common trap to run into would be the desert temple landmines. At the base of a desert temple, there are some colored terracotta blocks on the floor. Break the center-most colored terracotta to peer into the buried treasure room.

Buried Treasure Room

In every desert temple, there is a buried treasure room with a pressure plate in the middle. Go down carefully and disarm the TNT by breaking the pressure plate.

TNT pressure plate

You can take this TNT for yourself by breaking it with anything.

How do you activate TNT on Minecraft?

TNT can be activated with Redstone. It will activate when it receives power from a lever, Redstone torch, button, pressure plate, or any other activator.

Activating TNT in Minecraft

After you activate the TNT you will see it pop up slightly and begin to flash. After about a three-second countdown the TNT will explode.

TNT Explosion in Minecraft

You can also light TNT with flint and steel. Simply place the TNT and right-click on it with the flint and steel to light it.

Minecraft TNT

TNT will also light if there is fire of any kind nearby. Be careful placing it near lava and do not place TNT anywhere with fire unless you are trying to light it.

TNT lighted in Minecraft

The explosion of TNT can also light nearby TNT.

TNT Explosion in Minecraft

If any other TNT blocks are in the radius of one that explodes, the rest will light and subsequently explode.

Behavior of TNT

TNT behaves much like one would expect it to. It will light when activated by Redstone currents or with fire, and the explosion will cause nearby TNT to also explode. TNT is also affected by gravity, but not when it is placed. You can place TNT above a large drop and it will not fall until you light it. It will fall about seventy blocks before it explodes.

TNT does not destroy any blocks when surrounded by water or lava, but it will still deal damage to anything unfortunate enough to be in the blast radius. The blast from TNT can kill a player if they are close enough to the center of the blast. If you need to quickly escape the blast of TNT you can place blocks between the explosion and yourself to mitigate the damage.

FAQ

Does TNT destroy diamonds?

TNT will destroy diamonds and diamond blocks. When the diamond ore is destroyed it will drop XP like normal, but the amount of diamonds you can retrieve seems to be much lower than the number of diamonds there were. In my tests, I blew up nine diamond ores and was able to pick up anywhere from 0-4 diamonds.

How do you spawn 1000 TNT command?

If you want to quickly summon a large block of TNT to destroy the world you are in, the command to do so is “/fill ~ ~ ~ ~10 ~10 ~10 TNT”. This will create a block of 1331 TNT right before your eyes.

Spawning 1000 TNT in Minecraft

How much damage does TNT do?

Being in the middle of the blast radius will do about twenty-five points of damage or twelve and a half-full hearts. The damage you take depends on the proximity to the TNT explosion, but the maximum per explosion is about twenty-five points of damage.

Did you know?

You can use TNT to break into the top of underwater temples. There is almost always an elder guardian in the top middle room of an underwater temple. Breaking in with mining fatigue can take a long time. Just light some TNT into the water and place sand above it so that the TNT is technically in a sand block instead of a water block. The explosion will break blocks as normal.

You can use TNT to launch TNT. You can craft a Redstone device that will launch TNT into the air in front of you. Use about three-four TNT that falls into flowing water and a TNT block at the end of the blocks on a slab. You will need to activate all the TNT that falls into the water at the same time and then the TNT you are trying to launch afterward.

Minecraft TNT

The three TNT will be pushed by the water and the flowing water will prevent the blocks from breaking. The Redstone repeaters are set to max delay to ensure that the TNT that is getting launched will activate last.

Minecraft TNT

Make sure to use a slab to gain more momentum from the explosion. Flick the lever to watch the TNT fly. Keep away from the device when it is about to fire. Just because it does not break blocks does not mean you do not take damage.

The Super TNT Mod is the best TNT mod for Minecraft:

The Super TNT Mod is the best TNT mod for Minecraft. It is considered the spiritual successor to the Too Much TNT Mod which has been dead since Minecraft 1.8. Back in the days of Minecraft 1.6 and 1.7, Super TNT and Too Much TNT were in steady competition to be better than one another. With the demise of the Too Much TNT mod, The Super TNT mod is now left as the best TNT mod for Minecraft.

It is better than “Even More Explosives. It is better than the “Fun TNT Mod” and it is also better than the “Xplosives” mod in every way. In this article, it will be pointed out not only why it’s better than all these other mods, but in nearly every aspect at which it excels.

Here is a quick comparison chart. You can see that the Super TNT Mod does circles around the other ones.

Super TNT Mod for Minecraft 02

Below, we will go over each section in detail:

1. Different types of TNTs:

Xplosives:

Let us first go over the TNTs in the Xplosives mod. There are 11 of them.

Super TNT Mod for Minecraft 03

There is some variety in the Xplosives mod. There is a snowball TNT. It throws snowballs in all directions which is kind of cool. There are 2 arrow TNTs. 1 of them shoots regular arrows everywhere and the second arrow TNT shoots enchanted arrows everywhere. There is also a lava TNT and a lightning TNT type thing.

Fun TNT Mod:

Let’s take a look at the Fun TNT Mod.

It only has a paltry 5 different TNTs:

Super TNT Mod for Minecraft 04

From left to right, we have Tier 8 TNT, Tier 128 TNT, Tier 2 TNT, Tier 64 TNT and then “NUKE!”. Tier 8 is 8 times more powerful than regular TNT, Tier 2 is 2 times more powerful than regular TNT and so on.

There are no TNTs that do anything rad or special like with the other 3 TNT mods being reviewed here. They all just explode stuff, plain and simple.

Even More Explosives:

Here is a big one: Even More Explosives. It has throwable dynamites rather than stationary TNT blocks. There are 51 different explosions in that mod

Super TNT Mod for Minecraft 05

This mod actually makes an attempt to have a more diverse range of different TNTs, ranging from explosive to special effects and things like that. For example, there is a Dynamite x1000, a snow dynamite, a sponge dynamite, a soul sand dynamite some other things. The major issue with this is that they are all really low quality were probably products of very little effort. The explosions look bad and the special TNTs are really lame and don’t work well. There will be more on that later.

The Super TNT Mod:

The Super TNT Mod has 56 different TNTs. It has many TNTs with a vast range of different functions from causing major destruction to flooding the world with diamonds to offending North Korea so badly that it starts a war.

Super TNT Mod for Minecraft 06

Unlike the Even More TNT Mod, every single TNT not only works well but looks good and has satisfying results.

2. The Most Destructive Explosion

Xplosives:

Xplosives has a larger TNT explosion than both the Fun TNT mod AND the Even More Explosives mod. It is also the only mod other than Super TNT that doesn’t have incredibly ugly looking explosions.

Super TNT Mod for Minecraft 07

The biggest TNT in the Xplosives mod is the Hydrogen Bomb. I estimate that it’s 2000x more powerful than regular TNT although the exact figure isn’t published by the author anywhere. It is roughly the same as the Massive TNT in the Super TNT Mod.

Super TNT Mod for Minecraft 08

The explosion from the Hydrogen Bomb reasonably big. It’s 256 times more powerful than regular TNT. It’s still nothing compared to even the medium to small explosions in Super TNT but it’s actually pretty ok. Fun TNT and Even More Explosives, however, are much less well done and less satisfying. Let’s take a look.

Fun TNT Mod:

Fun TNT mod probably has the worst, most incredibly lame “biggest TNT” I have ever seen in any TNT mod. I’ve seen better explosions in mods made from notepad or Cheat Engine.

Super TNT Mod for Minecraft 09

The TNT itself looks promising enough. It is called “NUKE!”, after all.

Super TNT Mod for Minecraft 10

Here it is. It looks like crap.

Even More Explosives:

The most powerful explosion in the Even More Explosives mod is the “Dynamite x1000”. The explosion that it makes looks just as bad as the nuke in the Fun TNT Mod.

Super TNT Mod for Minecraft 11

It’s just a bigger version of the nuke explosion. It is 1000 times bigger than regular TNT. I hear multiple explode sound effects every time I explode Dynamite x1000 so they must have taken 4 of something the size of the nuke and put it together or something. It looks bad compared to the Super TNT Mod.

The Super TNT Mod:

The Super TNT mod has the biggest and most satisfying explosions you will ever see in any TNT mod.

Here is an example of an explosion from the Doom TNT. Look at how beautiful and magnificent the crater is. Nothing like this has been seen in any of the previous mods whatsoever.

Super TNT Mod for Minecraft 12

So here is the biggest TNT in the Super TNT mod. It packs a serious punch. It is 100000 times more powerful than regular TNT.

Super TNT Mod for Minecraft 13

The explosion is so enormous that it destroys a 10000×10000 block area.

Super TNT Mod for Minecraft 14

This explosion is so big that it puts all the other TNT mods to shame. You will probably never find this in any other TNT mod ever.

3. Explosion quality and effects

Xplosives:

In addition to destructive TNTs, Xplosives has other functioning TNTs that do different things such as Snowball TNT, Lava TNT, and 2 Arrow TNTs. At least they all work. Maybe that’s why there are only 11 TNTs; because they knew they would mess it up too badly (like Even More Explosives did) if they made a whole lot.

Fun TNT Mod:

The Fun TNT mod doesn’t have anything other than destructive TNTs (and not very good ones at that). But it gets worse. They must not have known how to make textures work right because every time you ignite one of these TNTs, the texture disappears.

Super TNT Mod for Minecraft 15

Even More Explosives:

Even more, explosives actually make an attempt to make additional TNTs that do things other than just blow up. I guess since they figured that they couldn’t get the craters to work well they would try something else. There are things like snow dynamite, sand dynamite, ice dynamite, sponge dynamite and soul sand dynamite. It sounds like a good thing at first but you are about to see just how pointless these really are.

Lets first look at snow dynamite. We will compare it to Super TNT’s Snow TNT:

Super TNT Mod for Minecraft 16

The Super TNT mod’s Snow TNT nicely covered the surrounding area in a blanket of snow, freezing any water that was nearby. The Even More Explosive mod’s Snow Dynamite, on the other hand, just spawned a glob of snow. That’s all it does.

In fact, almost all of the Even More Explosive mod’s special explosions do exactly the same thing. They all just spawn globs of whatever is in their title. Sponge Dynamite spawns a glob of sponge. Soul Sand Dynamite spawns a glob of soul sand. The ice one gives you a glob of ice. They’re all almost exactly the same. Here’s a picture of the sponge dynamite also:

Super TNT Mod for Minecraft 17

The sponge dynamite is a total joke. Super TNT mod’s Sponge TNT, on the left, soaked up almost the whole lake. Both of these screenshots were taken at the same lake.

So to wrap it up, Even More Explosives was certainly an attempt at making a TNT mod. It’s lackluster features and shortcomings were what caused the Super TNT mod to be created.

The Super TNT Mod:

The Super TNT mod is the obviously the best TNT mod for Minecraft. It is far better than any other TNT mod in any way and perhaps it will inspire the creation of higher quality mods in general.

List of 56 TNTs added to Minecraft (Updating):

1. Massive TNT

Super TNT Mod for Minecraft 31

To craft it, you will need 4 Large TNTs arranged together as shown in the diagram:

Super TNT Mod for Minecraft 32

This makes a pretty big explosion. Below is the aftermath:

Super TNT Mod for Minecraft 33

As you can see, this is a really big crater. This, however, is only the 2nd biggest TNT in the mod. There is much stronger stuff.

2. The Super TNT of Mass Destruction

This monstrosity is the Super TNT. It makes a big boom.

Super TNT Mod for Minecraft 34

To craft it, you will need 8 Massive TNTs and 1 Biome Buster and they must be arranged like so.

Super TNT Mod for Minecraft 35

It makes an utterly enormous crater. This is still not even close to being the biggest explosion in the mod.

Super TNT Mod for Minecraft 36

3. Doom TNT: The Gold Plated Plutonium Alloy Coated Eight Volume Nuclear Donkey Edition

This is called Doom TNT: The Gold Plated Plutonium Alloy Coated Eight Volume Nuclear Donkey Edition. This TNT was previously named “This is so big it will crash your computer” in the old version of the mod. Due to various reasons, it is no longer at risk of crashing your game as long as you give Java enough ram. Use -Xmx3G minimum to not run out of memory but -Xmx8G is recommended for reliable stability.

Super TNT Mod for Minecraft 37

To craft it, you will need 4 Super TNTs.

Super TNT Mod for Minecraft 38

This is where the explosions start getting serious. As you can see in the below picture, that’s a really big hole.

Super TNT Mod for Minecraft 39

It must be noted that this is still not the biggest TNT in the mod.

4. The End TNT

If you thought it wasn’t possible to make a bigger explosion, you were wrong. This is The End TNT. It’s dangerous.

Up until now, if you have experienced considerable lag, you just don’t have a very good computer. This is the first TNT that just takes a minute to explode. For this TNT and anything bigger, there is a progress report in the chat so you know it’s still working.

Super TNT Mod for Minecraft 40

This monstrosity can be crafted with 9 Doom TNTs.

Super TNT Mod for Minecraft 41

The explosion is really really big. It is also 100% impossible to make a blast-resistant wall with any amount of Obsidian. Anything within the blast radius dies, end of story. I guess you would have had a hard time making a blast-resistant wall with any of the other ones too but it’s programmaticly impossible to protect yourself or anything else with this one.

Super TNT Mod for Minecraft 42

This is a big huge explosion and all but it’s childs play compared to the TNTs more powerful than this.

5.Black Hole TNT

This is the Black Hole TNT.

The Black Hole TNT makes such a ridiculously big explosion that it makes anything before this look like child’s play. It is serious business.

This part is important: This TNT, as well as anything bigger can be configured to destroy bedrock or not destroy bedrock. To destroy bedrock, place this on top of a bedrock block. To not destroy bedrock, place this on top of something other than a bedrock block. If it is set to destroy bedrock, it will destroy ALL bedrock within the bounds of the blast.

Super TNT Mod for Minecraft 43

This behemoth can be crafted with 9, count’em, 9 End TNTs.

Super TNT Mod for Minecraft 44

The explosion, to combat lag a bit, makes a square crater and not a round or circular one. Without making it square, it would take nearly 32GB of ram to explode. With a square crater, it takes no more system resources than the End TNT or Doom TNT.

As you can see, the hole is really big. You can’t see the other end. It is a 1000×1000 crater.

Super TNT Mod for Minecraft 45

Guess what though? It still isn’t the biggest one.

More to come…

System Requirements:

To play this mod, you need to be using Minecraft 1.12.2. Forge also has to be installed.

In order to prevent your game from crashing, you should probably use at least -Xmx3G for your launch arguments but I recommend -Xmx8G if you have the ram for it. This mod does take less ram than the 1.7.2 version and lags less but it still helps to have a good computer and have java properly set up.

Note that the “No” TNT and the Anti-Dimensional Singularity TNT need at least 8GB (recommended 32GB for the “No” TNT) to not crash and it will take a long time to explode. The Black Hole TNT takes a long time if you don’t have a good computer. Everything else is reasonable and barely lags on reasonable machines.

Only LIGHT this TNT DIAMOND ORE can you BECOME THE LUCKY in Minecraft !

Minecraft diamonds | Where to find diamond ore

It's a cliché, but diamonds might actually be one of your best friends in Minecraft. They can be used to craft some of the game's best and most durable gear, and so they're a highly sought-after material.

To see this content please enable targeting cookies.

However, diamonds are really rare in the world of Minecraft. Furthermore, not only do you need to know where and how to find them — you also need to know the right tools to bring with you to mine them.

On this page:

Where to find diamonds in Minecraft

Diamonds can randomly be found in loot chests throughout the world. But if you're looking for a more reliable way of getting diamonds — particularly if you want them in any quantity — you want to look for diamond ore.

Diamond ore blocks are light grey with aquamarine flecks. They can spawn anywhere between Levels 1-15 of the Overworld. However, they are most commonly found between Levels 5-12. In practical terms, this means you're going to have to dig down in order to find a proper seam of diamonds.

Diamonds in 1.17

Minecraft Java Edition 1.17 makes changes to the world generation, allowing you to dig below Y-Level 0 and into negative level numbers. This affects the spawn of various ores, including diamonds.

In this version, diamonds spawn between levels 14 and -63, with the heaviest concentration of diamonds spawning at levels -63 to -53.

How to tell which level you're on

If you're playing the Java Edition, you can press F3 to see the debug screen, which includes details of which level you're currently standing on.

If you're playing the Bedrock Edition, you can set Show Coordinates in your game settings. Your current level will be included in the on-screen information.

How to mine diamonds in Minecraft

In order to extract diamonds from diamond ore, you'll need either an iron pickaxe or (somewhat ironically) a diamond pickaxe.

Pickaxes made of other materials will still cut through diamond ore, but you won't actually gather diamonds by doing so. This can potentially waste a diamond ore block that you spent all that time tracking down — so make sure you have the appropriate tools equipped!

Speaking of the proper tools: since diamonds spawn underground, you're going to need to bring plenty of torches with you.

Another useful piece of equipment to bring with you is a water bucket. This is because lava pools and diamond ore tend to populate the same levels. Lava is not only potentially dangerous to you, but it can destroy diamond ore blocks — so having water on hand to neutralise these effects is a very good idea.

Diamond mining by exploration

This is perhaps the most time-consuming method of mining diamonds. It's also potentially quite dangerous, as it's likely you'll encounter a lot of enemies. But it is the most organic way of finding diamonds, which allows you to continue exploring the game-world without focussing exclusively on resource farming.

This method basically involves exploring any caves you find. You can enter caves by finding an entrance on the surface, or by breaking into them while digging down. Once underground you'll find open spaces, as well as shafts leading between caves and levels.

Seams of diamond ore will occasionally be found naturally occurring in these open spaces.

Diamond mining by branch mining

The first method is good if you're still exploring during the early game, but it's highly unreliable. Diamond ore is a rare resource, and the odds of stumbling across some are quite low (though it's far from impossible) — especially since they're only half as likely to spawn adjacent to a naturally open space.

If you want to take a more targeted approach to farming diamonds, the best method is branch mining. Compared to the exploration method, the only real downside of branch mining is that it uses up tools much quicker.

To establish a branch mine, dig down to the diamond layers at levels 5-12 (or -63 to -53 if you're playing Java Edition 1.17). It's highly recommended you do this by creating a staircase rather than digging directly downwards! To begin with, it's better to stay at the higher levels where diamonds are likely to spawn, as this reduces the risk of you digging underneath a lava pool.

Once you reach the desired level, begin carving out hallways that are two blocks high by one block wide. This approach has the best odds of eventually uncovering a seam of diamond ore.

If you find a good seam, it's worth starting a second sub-branch to see if it leads anywhere. Diamond ore veins often seem to intersect, so start a new hallway just to check it out.

Finally, you'll probably end up breaking through into a few caves while branch mining. These caves have a high likelihood to contain diamond ore, since they'll be on the right level, so be sure to explore them fully before resuming your branch mining activities.

Diamond mining using TNT

TNT isn't the easiest tool to get hold of, and you're frankly unlikely to have enough of it going spare to use on diamond mining until fairly late in the game. If and when you reach this point, however, it's actually the most efficient way to farm diamonds: you get a 100% of the materials dropped by blocks you destroy using TNT.

So if you find a seam of diamond ore using either of the above methods, you can chuck a bunch of TNT at it, step back, and collect your diamonds.

It's important to note that this method only works in the Java Edition. Players using the Bedrock Edition should avoid it, as the 100% returns aren't available to them.

7 New Ways to Craft TNT In Minecraft!

This article is about the regular TNT block. For the consumable in Minecraft Dungeons, see MCD:TNT. For other uses, see TNT (disambiguation).

Not to be confused with Tint.

    TNT JE3 BE2.png

TNT is an explosive block that can be primed to generate an explosion.

    Obtaining[]

TNT can be broken instantly with any tool, or without a tool. However, primed TNT cannot be broken, as it is an entity, but it can be removed with the /kill command.

    Entity loot[]

TNT also drops when a minecart with TNT is broken.

    Chest loot[]

    Natural generation[]

Nine TNT blocks occur naturally in each desert pyramid trap.

Two TNT blocks flank a trapped chest in one secret woodland mansion room.

    Crafting[]

    Usage[]

TNT blocks can be activated by:

    Behavior[]

    TNT JE3 BE2.png

Once activated, TNT turns into an entity, which includes being affected by gravity. The new primed TNT is spawned at the center (+0.5,+0.5,+0.5) of where the TNT block was, like a cube with an edge length of 0.98. Its fuse lasts 40 redstone ticks (4 seconds/80 game ticks) if activated by redstone or fire, or a random number between 10 and 30 game ticks (0.5 to 1.5 seconds) if it is destroyed by another explosion.

Once spawned, primed TNT is given a vertical velocity of 0.2 blocks per tick, and a horizontal velocity of 0.02 blocks per tick in a random direction. Given these velocities, the TNT travels 0.166 blocks (or 6 block pixels) horizontally before it stops, given there is no block in the way. When the countdown timer expires, the TNT explodes. If in the air, TNT falls roughly 77 blocks before exploding once it is ignited. The explosion has an explosive force of 4.

Primed TNT's texture blinks, alternating every 0.5 seconds between the TNT block's texture, and a copy of it that has been brightened to near-white. The effect is dynamic and the brightened texture can't be found in the assets.

Primed TNT cannot be pushed by players or other mobs, but it moves when in flowing water or lava. Water/lava cannot push primed TNT into minecarts or boats.

When primed TNT detonates while in water or lava, it does not break any blocks. It does still damage players, mobs, and other entities.‌[Java Edition only][1] Primed TNT that detonates outside water can still damage submerged blocks.

To make TNT destroy blocks in the water, e.g. to enter an ocean monument from the top, one can place sand or gravel on the TNT before it is primed. Priming the TNT causes the sand or gravel to fall one block, engulfing the TNT. Because the TNT is no longer immersed in water, it can destroy the surrounding blocks.

Primed TNT is not teleported when entering a nether portal; instead, it passes through portal blocks.‌[Java Edition only] Primed TNT teleports as expected when entering an end portal, maintaining its direction and speed. The fuse timer keeps counting down (unless the spawn chunks are unloaded, then it pauses until a player loads the chunks).

If the TNT is primed atop any sort of fence post that is two blocks high or larger, it falls through the fence block on which it was activated and stops on the next lower one. Its detonation damages only the fence block it was "stuck" in.

In Java Edition primed TNT summoned by a command explodes immediately because the fuse time defaults to zero if not specified.

    Redstone component[]

For redstone to activate TNT, it must either lead directly to the TNT, or power an adjacent block.

    Traps[]

    See also: Tutorials/Traps

TNT can be used in a variety of traps. The simplest of them – a land mine – is made of TNT connected to a pressure plate or tripwire with redstone. One such trap generates naturally in desert pyramids under the loot area.

    Cannons[]

    See also: Tutorials/TNT cannons

TNT cannons are mechanisms that launch primed TNT into the air. Some cannons can also be used to launch other entities or objects into the air.

    Mob farms[]

    See also: Tutorials/Mob farm

Mobs killed by player-ignited TNT (via flint and steel or by flaming arrows) drop experience orbs as though they were killed by the player in regular combat.

    Issues[]

Issues relating to "TNT" are maintained on the bug tracker. Report issues there.

    Trivia[]

    • "TNT" stands for Trinitrotoluene.
    • The use of sand in the crafting recipe references dynamite, a different high explosive than TNT, consisting of nitroglycerine mixed with diatomaceous earth (which is mostly silica, the same chemical compound as yellow sand).
    • Although flint and steel cannot light fires in Adventure Mode, it can still ignite TNT.
    • It takes 19.75 blocks to fall for it to reduce the timer for one second.
    • Although primed TNT normally gets caught in cobwebs, TNT propelled fast enough flies through them without slowing down at all.
    • It is slightly smaller than a full block when activated, as with all entity versions of blocks (see shulker).
    • Using flint and steel to ignite it sets it off at once, but fire must burn it for many seconds before triggering.
    • In Pi Edition, TNT by default doesn't do anything, but when set to data value 1, it ignites when broken.
    • The longest fuse time of TNT is 27 minutes and 18.35 seconds, or 32,767 ticks.
    • Attempting to ignite TNT while sneaking results in the block being lit on fire, rather than the TNT becoming primed.
    • Standing behind blocks during an explosion dramatically reduces knockback and damage from the explosion.
    • TNT does not damage the player on peaceful difficulty, however, it does break blocks and damage entities.
    • The TNT fuse sound uses the same sound file as when a creeper is primed, but it is played at a higher pitch when the TNT is primed.
