Like the overall Encompass Rating System, the Culture & Community Beacon is designed to evolve as metrics are developed and ready for integration. Our partnership with Feedback Labs and Guidestar by Candid, and other partners including Fund for Shared Insight, GlobalGiving, and Keystone Accountability, enables us to launch the first version of this beacon with Constituent Feedback information collected on Candid's site.

Feedback practices have been shown to support better Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion outcomes, an essential area of assessment that we intend to further expand and develop in the future. Feedback Labs has documented several studies which indicate that beyond achieving organizational goals, nonprofits that are attentive and responsive to concerns and ideas raised by beneficiaries establish stronger relationships with the people they serve, promote greater equity, and empower constituents in ways that can help to ensure better long-term outcomes. You can find resources to help nonprofits improve their feedback practices here.

Support Adoption and Rescue. Why go to a dog breeder, cat breeder or pet store to buy a dog or buy a cat when you can adopt?

Why Should You Adopt?

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you'll have a friend for life.

What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?

When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.

So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.

Moab Search and Rescue ~ How Not to Get Rescued

Every Underdog
Has A Story

Who We Are

Underdog Animal Rescue and Rehab is a nonprofit headquartered in Moab, Utah. We are dedicated to caring for the estimated 250,000 stray dogs from Native American reservations of the Four Corners area of the Southwest United States.

Working with reservation communities, we provide transportation, veterinary care, spay/neuter and vaccination clinics, and adoption services.

Our Mission & History

An Underdog's Journey

The road to adoption can be ruff! Each Underdog’s experience is unique. While we don’t always have the full history for each dog, we know many of them experience hardship before they come to us. Underdogs learn many new skills on the way to finding their new homes.

Where Are Underdogs From?

All of our animals are true rescues from the Native American reservations of the Four Corners area including Navajo, Hopi, Ute, Apache, and Zuni nations and tribal reserves. These lands span the southwestern corner of Colorado, southeastern corner of Utah, northeastern corner of Arizona, and northwestern corner of New Mexico.

What does it mean to be a true rescue? The stray dogs of the Four Corners reservations only have a life expectancy of two years unless rescued. Underdog Rescue is the only rescue in Utah that exclusively serves these reservations. We hope to help build a future where Native American communities have the resources to support their families and their animals.

Underdog Animal Rescue and Rehab

Underdog Animal Rescue and Rehab is a three-year old, registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to helping the reported 250,000 stray companion animals on the Native American reservations of the Southwest United States. Through transport, vet care, and adoption services, Underdog Rescue helps to combat the overpopulation of stray animals of the Four Corners.

Our work is focused mainly on the Navajo Nation as it is the closest tribal reserve to the Underdog facility in Moab, Utah. Underdog houses most of the rescues at this facility, while utilizing foster homes for more high maintenance animals.

From humble beginnings, and due to the immense need, Underdog Animal Rescue and Rehab has grown into a significant force in reservation rescue. Since our founding, we have expanded our reach significantly, improved the property where our dogs are housed, educated our staff, grown our volunteer base to 174 registered volunteers, expanded our foster network into neighboring cities, and become the most popular non-profit in Moab by a community vote.

We have also developed a network of regional shelters that want our dogs, and have saved, vetted, and placed nearly 1,000 animals in homes since our founding. We surpassed our 1,000th dog rescued in September of 2020. We have helped hundreds more through free and low-cost vaccination and spay/neuter clinics and facilitated vet care for owned animals in need on the reservations.
