An ink cartridge is the part that will contain the ink, while a printhead is the part in an inkjet printer that will spray the ink onto the paper.
Please note that, for a good portion of the ink cartridges on the market, these two are combined into one (the ink cartridge will also be able to spray the ink like a printhead). If you are not sure if that's the case with your inks, please confirm with your printer's manual or reach out to our customer service.
Each inkjet printer brand contains its own type of ink cartridges, which means that the cartridges are not compatible across brands. Certain printers contain ink cartridges that combine three colours -- magenta, yellow and cyan -- into one cartridge. Other printers contain each colour in its own cartridge. On certain printers, if one cartridge is out of ink, the printer will not print.
Every inkjet printer contains at least one printhead that applies ink onto paper and forms a document. Some printers contain two printheads, one for black and one for colour ink, whereas other printers may contain a separate printhead for each ink cartridge. All printheads must be in working order for the printer to print.
Which Printers Have the Printhead Built into the Cartridge?
Whether you’re updating your office with a new printer, replacing a malfunctioning one, or equipping your brand new cowering space with all the essentials, it has never been easier to find the printer that suits your specific needs.
If you are in the market for a brand new printer, consider which one might be best for your office, school, or home. We frequently encounter shoppers considering which printers have the printhead built into the cartridge. There are some misconceptions about this, so let’s clear them up.
Benefits of Built-in Printheads
The printhead is the part of the cartridge that applies the ink directly to the page, while the cartridge is the replaceable supply for the ink. Sometimes known as the “ink tank,” the cartridge houses the printhead on many modern inkjet printers.
How lucky are we to be living in 2019? If you recall some of the original machines before the days of inkjet printers, you might remember how the print quality would gradually decrease over time when you replaced the cartridge but not the printhead itself. With built-in printheads, the print quality remains the same indefinitely.
One and the Same
Nowadays, if you purchase an inkjet printer, you can almost guarantee that the printer will be built into the cartridge. It’s one of the benefits of buying a contemporary printer in the first place.
However, if you are uncertain, it might help to know that some printer brands that definitely have the printhead built into the ink cartridge include Brother, HP, Canon, Epson, Hewlett-Packard, Lexmark, Xerox, and Dell, among others. Compatible ink cartridges are typically used with all of these.
Compatible Ink Cartridges
Narrowing down your choice of printer model can be difficult enough, but finding a selection of compatible ink cartridges is another headache on top of it. You’re not alone—finding a cartridge that is compatible is a nightmare office worker have been dealing with for ages. The good thing is that nowadays, many ink cartridges are designed to be compatible with a variety of models.
Many people struggle to figure out which ink cartridge is compatible with their chosen model of printer, especially since there are so many brands that make popular printers, including Canon, Brother, Xerox, Dell, and more. However, compatible ink cartridges make the decision simple and stress-free. Compatible ink is now pretty much the go-to in most offices nationwide.

What Is the Difference Between Printer Cartridges & Cartridge Printheads?
By Nick Davis
Your office inkjet printer contains replaceable cartridges that hold black, magenta, yellow and cyan ink. The cartridges send a mixture of the ink to your printer's printhead that, in turn, sprays the ink onto paper. The cartridges themselves only hold ink and are not capable of spraying ink onto paper. The printhead doesn't store ink -- ink only flows through it. Your inkjet printer cannot print without both components working together.
Each inkjet printer brand contains its own type of ink cartridges, which means that the cartridges are not compatible across brands. Certain printers contain ink cartridges that combine three colors -- magenta, yellow and cyan -- into one cartridge. Other printers contain each color in its own cartridge. On certain printers, if one cartridge is out of ink, the printer will not print.
Every inkjet printer contains at least one printhead that applies ink onto paper and forms a document. Some printers contain two printheads, one for black and one for color ink, whereas other printers may contain a separate printhead for each ink cartridge. All printheads must be in working order for the printer to print.
Some inkjet printers have built-in printheads on the bottom of the ink cartridges. You cannot remove these printheads -- they work as long as the cartridges contain ink, and then you replace the cartridges. Combined ink/printhead units are generally more expensive than units with separate cartridges and printheads; however, they do eliminate the hassle of buying and replacing separate printheads.
Like any replaceable component, ink cartridges and printheads do not last forever and eventually fail. Separate ink cartridges and printheads, as well as combined ink/printhead units, are available from office supply, computer, electronics and retail stores. The components are also available from online outlets and auction websites. Consult your inkjet printer's user manual for the type of ink cartridges and printheads your printer accepts.
