WEST VALLEY CITY — Two people wanted in connection with the shooting death of a 17-year-old boy in West Valley City have been arrested in Wyoming.

West Valley police announced Wednesday that Saivontre Isiah Jordan Spillers, 25, of West Valley City, and Adrian Kordell Emanuel McCleary, 22, of Taylorsville, were taken into custody in Evanston with the assistance of Evanston police. They were wanted in connection with the killing of Edwin B. Reyes, 17, at Peachwood Park, 3525 W. 3965 South, on Sunday night.

Reyes was related to a West Valley police officer, the department said in a tweet, and asked West Jordan police to take over the investigation to avoid any possible conflict of interest.

Both men are expected to be extradited back to Utah to face charges.

Both also have lengthy criminal histories. Spillers has been involved in several recent drug and weapons-related incidents, according to court records.

On June 1, Spillers was charged in 3rd District Court with two counts of possession of a firearm by a restricted person, and drug possession with intent to distribute, both third-degree felonies. In that case, during a traffic stop, police found Spillers in possession of two guns, “53 individually wrapped DAB containers, 52 individually wrapped THC edibles” and more than $3,000 cash, according to charging documents.

In April, Spillers was charged with assault and domestic violence in the presence of a child.

In November, he was convicted of being a restricted person in possession of a firearm and assaulting a police officer. In that case, Spillers attempted to purchase a gun from a pawn shop, but had multiple felony warrants out for his arrest and police were called, according to charging documents. When officers arrived he got into a fight with them, causing minor injuries to one officer, the charges state. He is scheduled to be sentenced in that case on July 31.

In December, Spillers was convicted of aggravated assault in a domestic violence-related incident, court records state. He was scheduled to also be sentenced in that case on July 31.

Edwin Reyes

Edwin Reyes was the Cook County Commissioner for the County’s 8th district, in northwest Chicago. He held the position as a Democrat from 2009–2014.

Reyes attended Northern Illinois University in the early 1980s, after which he enlisted in the United States Air Force from 1983-1986 on active duty and eventually earned his bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts from Northeastern Illinois University in 1996.[1]

Political career[edit]

Reyes served as Chief of Staff for Chicago Alderman Rey Colón from 2003–2004. From 2006–2009, Reyes served as a state trooper on the security detail for governor Rod Blagojevich.[2]

County Commissioner[edit]

One of Reyes' first official votes as commissioner was to override John Stroger's veto of a sales tax cut in 2009.[3] During the 2010 election, Reyes listed his top three priorities as healthcare access, violence prevention, and educational resources.[4] The Chicago Tribune declined to endorse him that year, reporting that "Reyes answers to the men who sent him, Democratic bosses Dick Mell and Joseph Berrios."[5]

In 2013, Reyes supported a $25 tax on gun sales proposed by Toni Preckwinkle.[6] Reyes chaired the committees on veterans and law enforcement.[1]
