    Wow Armor development. The only standard is human?

    This is something thats been bugging me for a while now in terms of blizzards development team and how they create armor sets.

    While the degree of how they design the armor ingame is exceptional, I have an enormous issue with how they seem to set a standard for all armor creations, that being of the male human model.

    We see it all the time, here on mmo champ, when a new armor set comes out, it is always displayed on a human male model to show of there great new work they are giving the players. And for obvious reason, because the human male model is so straight backed, plain and unassuming, nothing can look bad when using such a generic model.

    And thats where the problems come from, when using armor pieces on other racial models (more male I'd say, since all females in wow are straight backed and petite), clipping issues come into it, ultimately ruining the way armor prices look on other characters.



    this is a generic look at the last tier set for cataclysm on a human male. looks great doesn't it?

    That is until you have that peice shown on a worgen male:



    Now suddenly not so great. Makes the warlock head look like a worgen with a bad chin infection.

    Likewise on a tauren:



    But its not just helms, Given the straight backed generic model humans have, remember all the fuss they made about the new belts they introduced into mists of pandaria, how it used a new form of visual technology that was above anything they tried before:



    Fantastic, on a human or a pandaren.. Until you try leveling a troll or another hunched character, and you get this:


    (Given, worgen can't be monks so can't get this belt, but its still there to see)

    I honestly could go on posting loads of images of examples where armor peices are obviously designed using the generic human male, and left by chance for the other races to look good, despite looking awful. But theres to many to count right now.

    I just wonder if the developers even consider so much of this when designing the sets, given I can appreciate its a pain staking job to get new armor pieces turned out. But its so rare to find armor that can look good and actually works for all characters across the spectrum and doesn't involve clipping, being to large, or look like shoulderpads floating over the characters shoulders (like most draenei or orcs).

    Sometimes the small details make for the better choice, and here I would like to see that taken notice of by the developers.

    That's all subjective. I always thought the priest T13 helm looked awesome on worgen and tauren. I really don't see what the issue with the belt on the troll/worgen is either, although that might be the camera angle. Is it clipping into their stomachs or something?

    EDIT: Never mind, I see the tassels are clipping into their legs.

    However I dont think its viable for the animators to actually sit there and remodel every piece of gear for the different races and keep them in line with the race specific animations. Since bipedal humans are the neutral model that all other races are based around its a safe bet to prioritize modelling the gear for humans, then briefly touching it up for other races.

    Helms should be at least for tauren and worgen, everything else works because all the races are bipedal and only 3 (tauren worgen and draenei) have 2 joint legs, which doesn't really matter.

    No the cord is actually phasing into there legs, just from standing around idol.

    Its only subjective is it works well with the model in question and someone can see that, you might be someone who doesn't mind a worgens snout poking though a helm that wasn't deigned for that. But having armor pieces clipping into the character isn't subjective, its just bad design.

    Orcs imo looks awesome in almost any set, reason why I play mostly Orcs aside from the Lore,etc. Now if only they could not be hunched, it would be EVEN better. (Oh Character models, ill see you soon)

    Well the priest helm was modified specifically to fit around worgen and tauren muzzles, and it looks good. If the muzzles were actually clipping through the faceguard that might be another story.

    The warlock helm looks silly, but again they're not clipping through it, so at least some thought was put into making them work.

    Helm items are individually reshaped for every race and gender.

    But what do you expect them to do? They have to base the gear on something and can't account for every race's body shapes all the time. They can't exactly make special gear for every race.

    The only other choice would be to just make all gear bland and simple, or to make every race look the same.

    They avoid as many clipping issues as they can without going in to tweak every single item by hand, and they still end up tweaking many of them that are too blatant. But species like like Worgen and Tauren were not made to really wear helms and head armor in the first place. We're lucky they even get the customization given to them that they do. They are better off with muzzles and head dresses, it's hard to design something in the first place for a race like that to wear on it's head that should be shared with every race in the game.

    Trolls and Tauren are supposed to have that hunch. Orcs were given an extremely exaggerated hunch back in WOW that makes their established look look like shit and people are right to wonder why. Orcs are supposed to have necks that slant, not shoulders that make them look like Forest Gump the Neanderthal.

    Which is why Thrall's new model, as well as Garrosh and Nazgrim in the Jade Forest intro, have had their back posture changed to look like it should look in the concept art.

    Human Male Base Model (WoW)

    Hi all! I had a lot of controversy, but ultimately I decided to post my human base model. This is the fourth version, but not the last one yet. As far as possible, I will update this model, as well as post models of other races when they are more or less ready.

    Now about this model:

    1) Model has 383 animations. Some of them are repeating, if I understand right. May be there are still some face pose static animations.

    2) I added 3 animations: Decay Flesh, Decay Bone, Dissipate.

    3) I fixed a lot of geometry, so it looks nice in animations.

    4) Model has fixed normals on all capes, tabards, skirt and any flat geoset on model (no more dark spots on model). ONE MOMENT! DON'T FORGET TO RECALCULATE NORMALS IN RETERA WHEN YOU FINISH YOUR CHARACTER.

    I want to ask one thing, when you will share character models which will be made on this base model, don't forget to mention Vulfar as a kind gesture:peasant-rolling-eyes:

    WoW Shadowlands added character customizations we’ve wanted for years, now live in alpha

    You want more character customization? Frankly, who doesn’t at this point in World of Warcraft‘s lifetime? Warlords of Draenor may have introduced updated character models, but the choices were still limited as far as what you could do with those models. In Shadowlands, WoW’s original races are about to get more character customization, including some updates that players have been clamoring for years to be added. This update has just been added to Humans in the Shadowlands alpha, featuring the different skin tones, hairstyles, and face shapes promised at BlizzCon plus new makeup, jewelry, and eye color options.

    On the short list displayed during the World of Warcraft: What’s Next panel at BlizzCon 2019, Ion Hazzikostas showed us just a small sampling of what will soon be available for players. Trolls will have more options for hair color, tusks, skin color, body paints, tattoos, and will even be able to set their eye color to something new if they wish.

    As for Dwarves, players will get that long-awaited Wildhammer update. Throw on some tattoos, change your hair color, skin color, and more. Forsaken players will be able to choose — finally — whether or not they’d like to have their bones showing, as well as a selection of different hair colors and other options.

    But the biggest and most startling update is to Humans. Sure, we’ve been able to choose our skin tone since the game began, but the facial options were, let’s say, limited, while the hair options were also…limited. In the sneak preview, Hazzikostas showed us a screenshot of a very different Azeroth — one full of people that are just as varied in hair texture, skin tones, and facial features as the world we live in today. Frankly, it’s about time.

    Hazzikostas did mention that this is a continually iterative process, and there will be more to come in the future — these are just the first steps. But let’s face it (no pun intended) — between the introduction of the Barber Shop and Transmogrification, it’s been made loud and clear that players like to change how their characters look. More options to do so, and more new features, hairstyles, hair colors — it’s all going to be well-received.

    Hazzikostas specified these updates were for WoW’s original races, so we may not see more options for races added in later expansions…at least not yet. If this goes over well, however, I suspect we’ll be seeing more customization overall in the future — for everyone on Azeroth.

    Early Character Models in World of Warcraft
    With Warlords of Draenor, Classic Warcraft races sport higher detail, updated animations, and new visuals that reflect the soul of their original models: teeth, bones, beards, 'hawks, and all. Look ready for action. Be ready for action.[1]

    The player character revamp[2] was an overhaul and upgrading of the player character models, the first wave of which was implemented in patch 6.0.2.

    One of the major features of Warlords of Draenor, the revamp initially updated all player character races introduced prior to Cataclysm except for the blood elves, which were revamped with patch 6.1.0. Revamped goblin and worgen models were announced at BlizzCon 2018 and subsequently released with patch 8.2.5.

    Following the main revamps, small adjustments have occasionally been made to the new models.

    Official overview

    As we’ve released new World of Warcraft content and expansions, we’ve received feedback that some of the earlier player character models and animations are no longer measuring up to the quality of the newer races. Because Warlords of Draenor takes players back to the homeland of the orcs—one of WoW's original playable races—it felt like a great time to update not just the orcs, but other playable races that could use a refresh.
    We know that many of you already strongly identify with the look of your current character, so we’re dedicating a lot of time and resources to make sure these updates capture each race’s iconic identity and personality. We’re still in the process of determining which races will be available upon the expansion’s release, but our goal is to update all eight of the original World of Warcraft playable races, along with the draenei and blood elves, over the course of the expansion launch and subsequent content updates.

    Notes and trivia

    • Warlords of Draenor saw players for the first time able to choose new faces for their characters at the barbershop, allowing players to re-customize the appearance of their new models for only a small amount of gold.
    • It is possible to disable the new character models, through a special option in the System -> Advanced menu. The option uses the old models in place of the new ones, although unique models such as Thrall and Khadgar will be unaffected.
    • Many "subraces", such as Dark Iron dwarves, leper gnomes, Grimtotem tauren, Mag'har orcs and high elves, were also updated.
    • Most of the new models were initially previewed in the Artcraft blog series, which also explored the development process for the revamp. For more information on the work behind the player character revamp, see those blogs.
    • The night elf female was one of the first models to be revamped, but was later reworked to incorporate what the team had learned from revisiting the other models.[3]
    • There were haircuts added to the game files in the Warlords of Draenor beta that never made it to live.[4]
    • A longer tail option for female draenei has been in the game files from Warlords, and also exists in the files for female Lightforged draenei, but isn't available in-game. It would later become available for the former race as of Shadowlands.[5]

Note that not all of the below preview images match the final implementation. These preview images were released during the development of the models.
