How to make grass grow in Minecraft

Grass is a plentiful item in Minecraft. It grows throughout every biome except for oceans, deserts, mesas, and iceberg biomes. This makes grass widely available for players to use and grow.

There are three different grass variants in Minecraft. There are tall grass blocks that grow in all sorts of biomes and can reach two blocks high. These tall grass blocks are often found in plains and forest biomes.

There are grass blocks that only grow up to one block high. These are quite common and often drop wheat seeds when mined. When sheered, these grass blocks will drop a grass block which players can place elsewhere.

The last grass variant is the grass on top of dirt blocks. This grass is found virtually everywhere in Minecraft. This article dives into the process of growing grass.

Bonemeal

The easiest way for players to grow grass blocks in Minecraft is bonemeal. Bonemeal is a grass, plant, and crop fertilizer made from the bones of skeletons.

These bones can be found throughout the Minecraft world during the dawn hours when skeletons have freshly died. Bones are also dropped from skeletons when a player kills them. There are several other ways for players to get bones in Minecraft as well.

To use bonemeal as a fertilizer, the player must have bonemeal in their hand. Once the bonemeal is in their hand, they should right-click on the ground, and a grass block will grow. Be patient, as it often takes a few bonemeals to produce immediate results.

Use bonemeal to grow tall and small grass blocks on any existing dirt block. It works much better if the dirt block is already grassy.

Growing grass on a dirt block

Oftentimes players are faced with the challenge of growing grass on a plain dirt block. This can take ages in Minecraft and is comparable to watching paint dry.

The easiest way to grow grass on those sad dirt blocks is to raise the light level of the area. Grass will form on top of dirt blocks at high light levels. The higher the light level, the easier the grass will form.

Another way to grow grass is to search for already existing grass and tall grass blocks. These are often found in plains and forest biomes.

The player needs a sheer to collect these blocks. Right-click on the grass blocks with the sheer in hand and then pick up the grass block item.

Players can plant this grass block anywhere they desire. Once the block is planted, it will technically grow again.

Commands

Players who enjoy using commands in Minecraft should be pleased to know they can also grow grass using a command. The command to grow grass is:

/give @p grass 1 or /give @p tallgrass 1 1

First, you can use them to spread more grass - just put dirt next to a grass block, and the grass will grow across after a while. Second, they spawn passive mobs. Third, sheep can eat them to regrow their wool. Fourth, you can use bonemeal on them to grow tall grass and flowers.

Accordingly, how do you make grass spread faster in Minecraft?

With the silk touch enchantment on any tool, you can obtain a 'grass block' when digging instead of a dirt block. Place the grass in a patch of dirt and it will spread normally. This is also helpful if you want to transplant Mycelium blocks. If you want to cheat - hack in a grass block, currently block ID 2.

Similarly, how do you make grass spread? Organic fertilizers or a mixture of fertilizer and compost facilitates uptake of nutrients by roots. Water new grass regularly. Keep soil moist until new grass becomes visible. Water daily or every other day, with the goal of giving new grass plants an inch of water per week.

Also to know, how long does it take for grass to spread in Minecraft?

Since redstone repeaters are Turing complete and perfectly timed, it is entirely possible to build a fully functional clock in Minecraft. 5 lines each with 10 blocks. Some blocks began to spread grass after about 10secs others need several minutes or even (in game) days.

How do you craft a grass block?

So let's get started!

  1. Find a Grass Block. First, you need to find a grass block in your Minecraft world.
  2. Hold a Tool with Silk Touch. To mine for a grass block, you need to dig up the grass block with a tool that has been enchanted with Silk Touch such as:
  3. Mine the Grass Block.
  4. Pick up the Grass Block.

This article is about the non-solid plant. For the solid block, see Grass Block. For other uses, see Grass (disambiguation).

Grass is a non-solid plant block that has wheat seeds as a drop. Its color is biome-dependent, and matches the color of grass blocks.

Tall grass[a] is a two-block high variety of grass.

Ferns are variants of grass found only in certain biomes and have the same characteristics as grass.

Large ferns are a two-block high variety of ferns.

Obtaining[]

Breaking[]

When broken normally, all variants drop 0 or 1 wheat seeds. They can be obtained as an item using shears.

The double tall grass and large ferns drop two of the respective single blocks when broken using shears. By planting a single fern, growing it with bone meal and then using shears on the resulting tall fern, a single fern yields two ferns.

Placing any block on grass breaks the grass, and the grass does not drop seeds.

Natural generation[]

Grass[]

Grass generates in the form of random patches, on grass blocks in most biomes with grassy soil, like plains or forests. Tall grass generates in plains, savannas and lush caves. There is approximately 8.6 tall grass per chunk.

Ferns[]

Ferns occur naturally only in jungle, taiga, taiga mountains, snowy taiga and giant tree taiga biomes. Large ferns generate in the same biomes, excluding jungles. Large ferns can be found in some taiga and snowy taiga‌[BE only] village houses.

Chest loot[]

Trading[]

Wandering traders can sell ferns for one emerald.

Post-generation[]

Bone meal can be used on a grass block to grow grass, ferns‌[Bedrock Edition only] and occasionally flowers on it and in its vicinity. It can also be used on grass or a fern to create a tall grass or large fern, respectively.

Usage[]

Double tall plants have a disproportionately large hitbox compared to other plants, which is a feature intentionally programmed into the game.[1][2] The only exception to this rule is tall seagrass.

Flower pots[]

Ferns can be placed in flower pots.

Composting[]

Placing grass into a composter has a 30% chance of raising the compost level by 1.

Placing tall grass into a composter has a 50% chance of raising the compost level by 1.

Placing a fern into a composter has a 65% chance of raising the compost level by 1.

MINECRAFT - How to Make Dirt Into Grass! 1.15.2

What's the best way to get grass onto a dirt platform?

I play on Xbox (i can't remember what version all I know is it's a few less than 1.14.0) but while making dirt bridges is one way and using pistons is another, making a piston to move grass blocks manually would be a pain and while making an airship (basically a Redstone rocket but on its side) would be fast (minus making it) the problem would be stopping it and if you wanna be lazy and not ride on it and have it stop on its own, you'd need to line up several blocks to stop it ( if you don't ride on it) or find another way to stop it but I find it easier to find an endermen who holds a grass block because when you kill it( p.s I don't know if it will 100% drop the block or if I've been SUPER lucky and its dropped for me every time). but also if you were to get a silk touch tool from the end city and ONLY for the tool, let me ask you, who has the 10-12 maybe even 14 hours to gather resources, get full diamond gear, find all the EOEs(Eye Of Enders), find the stronghold, find the portal ITSELF in the stronghold and everything else you need to defeat the ender dragon and go to the end city? no one! that's who! ya ok, maybe gamers who do it for a living have the time but the thing is if you want a silk touch tool. if you have an endless cow farm and loads of sugarcane and more wood than you could fit in 20 large chests ( over exaggerating) you could make the 18 (at least) bookcases you would need to get an enchantment table to give you a lvl 30 enchant which could be the silk touch you want! and SLAP that enchant on WHATEVER tool you WANT, its much easier than doing the whole other "mission impossible" plan, yes some people would love to do that, taking the low road ( which is fighting the ender dragon and doing mission impossible) rather than getting a better enchantment table or waiting for an endermen to spawn and pick up a grass block, but it's up to you how you execute this "problem"

Minecraft: How to Make Grass Grow

While it may not seem it, grass blocks can actually be a bit of a rare thing to find in your inventory in Minecraft. That’s because you can’t just break a grass block and pick it up with any old tool. If you do, you’ll just get a dirt block. In this guide, we’ll talk you through how to break and pick up grass blocks, how to make grass grow in Minecraft, and a few tips on how to grow grass faster in Minecraft to boot.

Growing Grass in Minecraft

First things first, you’re going to need to find a way to break and pick up grass blocks. That’s because to make grass grow and spread, you need to place existing grass blocks by dirt blocks.

As we mentioned above though, breaking a grass block with any old tool will see it turn to a dirt block. Instead, you’ll need to get a tool with the Silk Touch enchantment.

Getting Silk Touch Enchantment for Mining Grass Blocks

Silk Touch allows you to mine blocks and keep them in their current form, rather than them turning into their usual dropped item variants. It also allows you to gather items that are fragile like glass or ice, and mine and pick up diamond and coal ores, rather than the end-products.

This same rule applies for grass blocks. To get Silk Touch on any tool, simply follow the steps below. There is a bit of RNG involved in the process, so just keep rinse/repeating until you get Silk Touch as the level 30 enchantment.

  1. Check level 30 enchantment on diamond pickaxe. If Silk Touch appears, enchant it.
  2. If level 30 enchantment isn’t Silk Touch, do a level 1 enchant on a book
  3. Check enchantment on level 30 on pickaxe again.
  4. Rinse and repeat the process until you get Silk Touch.

Mining Grass Blocks With Silk Touch Tools

To mine grass blocks now you have a Silk Touch enchanted tool, simply equip it and break a grass block.

Placing Grass Blocks & Growing More Grass

Take your grass blocks over to where you want to grow grass, and place them around the outskirts of the area, like so.

After one in-game day, your grass should begin growing. It’ll be a slow spread as it’ll move to one dirt block that is touching the grass blocks you’ve placed.

Tips for Growing Grass Faster in Minecraft

To make grass grow even faster in Minecraft, it’s often been suggested that you need to raise the light level in the surrounding area. The best and easiest way of doing this is to place torches by the grass blocks that you want to grow.

This can be used to help you grow grass down stairways and underground, too.
