About Holy Lands
Holy Lands is a tabletop RPG, meaning the style of game is similar to Dungeons and Dragons. You create a character with various skills and stats, and role-play him or her through an adventure narrated by a group leader called the Racmaster. The Rac facilitates the game and the raconteur between players.
Ive been playing Holy Lands for close to a year now, and its left me impressed in every facet. I started with the Lite edition (available as a free download), skimmed through the full versions of 1st and 2nd Edition, and am now playing a game using the Trinity (3rd Edition) rulebook.
Holy Lands is written by Christians largely for Christians. You are expected to play your character as if they were Christian men and women. You also struggle with sins, and your fellow players can help you overcome temptations.
The setting is medieval Europe, so theres a lot of room to play fantasy-type characters and have them fit right into the world. You can fight demons and evil monarchs and be as historically accurate or not as you want.
Within the medieval setting, you have a variety of classes you can play, all with their various strengths. You can play anything from a Bard to a Cleric to a Devil Hunter to a Saint to a Spy. And, though all human, you can create your character with distinct statures (a replacement for fantasy races), including Weefolk on up to Giantfolk.
With any well-constructed tabletop RPG system, Holy Lands also allows you to customize your stats and skills with a wide range of abilities, including Faith points and different types of Miracles. Theres also plenty of gear to equip. I've included a blank character sheet at the end of this post so that you can see what I mean.
The combat system is unique and robust while still being easy enough to understand.
All you need to play is a copy of the rules, a Rac to run the game, and another player or two to join your party. After that, you can play anywherein person, in a Facebook group, via Skype, on Slack or Discord, or by email thread. Play live or write your characters actions and wait for the rest of the group to respond.
And speaking of which, the rulebooks themselves are well-written and nicely illustrated, serving as worthy additions to your gaming library.
The Trinity Rac guide (Book of Life) gives you some brief story ideas, and a membership to the website gives you access to maps and other resources, but the company hasnt yet written a full adventure that for the Trinity edition that Racs can use to lead their players through. That means that the Rac is going to need to put quite a bit of work into preparing the story. It also means that the story is going to hinge a lot on the Racs creativity.
You can find a couple of pre-written adventures for the older editions on the Holy Lands Facebook group page. Looking through them will give Racs an idea of how to structure their stories and, of course, if youre playing the older editions of the game, youre free to use those adventures.
So, to summarize, whats available is great; I simply wish there were more resources written to help people start a game or play different pre-generated adventures.
And while not a detraction for me, I did take a couple of points off for ease of use because there is a fairly lengthy rulebook to read that will deter some players from wanting to get into the game.
Who Should Play Holy Lands RPG?
If you enjoy getting into character and dont mind rolling some dice and reading the relatively short rulebook (compared to other tabletop RPGs) to understand the basics of the game, give it a try.
Some people dont like playing tabletop roleplaying games because it can take multiple sessions to get through one adventure. If thats you, dont play a long adventure. Have fun with the structure of the game playing short adventures that dont last longer than a session or two.
And because you can play in person or with a remote group, theres nothing stopping you from getting started in a game. You can even play for free if you dont care to start with the newest edition.
If you do want the Trinity players rulebook (Genesis), it costs $18 for a physical copy and less for a PDF version. The player book and the Rac guide together cost $ Visit the Holy Lands site to purchase them. If youd rather sample the earlier editions, go to the Holy Lands Facebook group and click on files to access the free downloads.
The Outlook for Holy LandsRPG
I dont think this game is getting as much attention as it should. Its in its 3rd edition now, though, so the creators seem to have the drive to keep it going. Lets hope more Christians embrace the game and grow the audience for it.
(Note: There's a Quick Character Generator on the Holy Lands website you can use if you'd rather not fill this all out yourself.)

An embracing welcome to thee, good traveler. Thou art in good Christian company here, among friends of all bloodlines. Twas my time while in the deepest of the Dungeons hall that Our Lord stretched His hand through the thickest of the Dark Veil and, so powerless was I, that I had only but reach my hand thither and be freed from The Bites of The Dragon of the Dungeon. My choice was not easy, for The Darkness be so inviting, so powerful its grasp upon me it became a comforting burn in a shadow of True Life; the True Life I once knew and loved.
I tethered my fingers, then my hand, then both hands in a tenacious grip about the pierced hand of Jesus Himself, and closed mine eyes, and prayed. Pulled free from the Dungeons into the Light my single desire was to but kneel once more before Our God, the One True God, and in a mutual love I wept. I arose and ran from the Dragons of the Dungeons a free man.
For it would be folly for me to say that I mastered the Light and never looked back, that I never sought the deceptive ways of Dragons again. Nay. The Dungeons became my Cross to bear and I busied myself in earnest against their wiles, using their perversions of the Light against them in a pursuit for the Truth so that others might find their way out a bit more easy than mine. I became a Pathfinder of mine own.
And so here we are, shoulder to shoulder we stand, united in the ways of our God, the One true and Living God of all lifetimes. Even in dark times we stand united, for the strains of the Darkness yet pull us still, bidding us to stray so that we should be ripped asunder and plunged into the darks of the Dungeons again for all to witness another great fall, and near they have come. But we have chosen Light; to rid the Path of the snares of these devils that would lead us to Death. One by one, little by little we hunt them. We destroy them, and we shall destroy them so that we in those final days find triumph in the Glory of God; that we shall present ourselves servants of God, hunters of devils, Pathfinders of freedom, and heroes of renown.
Welcome, Pathfinder. Stand and be counted as one who threw off the dark Dragons of the Dungeons so that we may only visit them with with the Strength of Light upon us, to rescue those who outstretch their hand in hope, searching for their Way out. We stand to serve as those who know that beautiful Way, and we shall remain among the prayerful well-wishers that the lost ones, those who seek the Path of Truth, shall with our aid find It. Until then, we be men and women of action, who now hunt that which once hunted us. And with that, good traveler, lets hunt some devils!
Welcome to the Holy Lands RPG Wiki
Holy Lands is a Christian based role-playing game wherein the characters adventure together as a team, fight demons, and strengthen their Faith in the Lord. Created by Faith Quest Games, an independent game publisher, Holy Lands has gone through three editions. The First Edition had a paperback release and could be ordered with accessories like the Adventure Packs and dice. The Second Edition or "Light Edition" was originally offered for sale on the Holy Lands website. With the introduction of the pending 3rd Edition, the Light Edition was made available for free download. The Light Edition is currently the most strongly supported by the fan base and is still widely available for download.
The Third Edition was a web based application that used a similar format to the tabletop game and was available with the choice of either free or premium accounts. Free accounts were limited to having only one character at a time and did not have access to the creation tools. Enterprising raconteurs (Rac/GM) were enticed by the robust creation tools that came with a subscription to the premium account. The premium content would come with a cost of $12 per year. This fee would grant access to a database of shared content and tools to create things such as: npc's, holy items, dungeons, towns, and scenarios. The collaborative nature of the website had huge potential to really grow the Holy Lands gaming community. Unfortunately, there was not enough fan participation to justify the operating costs of the site and it was eventually shut down.
The Fourth Edition dubbed “Trinity” is currently in development and is intended to be released as a three book set. It will be the most ambitious release of the Holy Lands game to date. Along with the glossy physical edition, there will be numerous additions to the core game. Book One, "Genesis", contains character creation, combat, and core rules. A full-color PDF of Book One was also available for download. Book Two "Book of Life" is still in the works and is supposed to contain: miracles, holy items, guilds, shops, animal companions, and enemy classes. The third and final book will be titled "Book of the Dead" and is set to contain: dungeon creation, sorcery, demons, devils, and monster races.
Despite the positive reception Book One has received, development on the series has been significantly hindered. The games creator has taken on the vast majority of work to finish books two and three by himself. Both the lack of a larger fan base, and a light approach to marketing the game have also contributed to the slower development. As of January there is no release schedule for Books Two and Three. Despite all materials being officially out of print, the game still maintains a following of loyal fans who continue to provide support and fan created materials. The "Light Edition" is still available for free download from various sites such as SCRIB'D, 4Shared, and from the Holy Lands Fan Group on Facebook. The "Light Edition" is still available and the creator has given his permission to print for personal use.
The Holy Lands RPG is a well written and concise game that removes the neo-pagan influences and sorcery from the fantasy role-playing game which are replaced with a well thought out Christian based system. Holy Lands uses a custom designed system to replicate the role-playing world. The basic setting of the game is on Earth during the time generally known as the Dark Ages.
