Subaru Impreza WRX/STi

Summary:

Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain model year 2005-2009 Outback and Legacy, 2008-2011 Impreza and 2008-2014 Impreza WRX/STI, and 2009-2013 Forester vehicles, currently, or formerly, registered in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. Salt water could splash on the brake lines through a gap in the fuel tank protector, resulting in excessive corrosion of the brake lines. Note that affected vehicles not currently, or formerly registered, in the salt belt states identified above are eligible for repair, at no cost to the customer, upon request.

What should you do:

Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will test the brake system by depressing the brake pedal and inspecting for brake fluid leaks. If no brake fluid seepage is observed, the affected areas will be rustproofed with anti-corrosion wax. If brake fluid seepage is observed, the brake lines will be replaced followed by rustproofing with anti-corrosion wax. These services will be performed free of charge. The recall began July 2014 and second notifications will run through November 2014. Owners may contact Subaru at 1-800-782-2783. Subaru's recall campaign number is WQK-47. Note: This recall supersedes recall 13V-110 which applied to certain 2005-2009 Legacy/Outback vehicles. Vehicles that were remedied under the previous campaign still need additional areas rust-proofed.

When I was shopping for a new car about two and a half years ago, I tested many different family sedans (Subaru Legacy, Mazda 6,Honda Accord Sport, Hyundai Sonata, and Ford Fusion), a small SUV (Mazda CX5), and one particularly fun hot hatch. The 2013 WRX hatchback was by far and away the most fun car of the bunch, but it was also the most utilitarian apart from the CX5. The combination of hauler/enthusiast’s toy instantly drew me to it and I eventually purchased a 2014MY, Dark Grey Metallic, Limited, WRX hatch. And quite honestly, it still puts a smile on my face every morning I turn that key and take off for work. I’ve owned this car for 30 months and I feel that this is ample enough time to give it a good long term review as I’ve lived through all 4 seasons with it as well as put nearly 42,000 miles on the clock. In short the car is excellent, but far from perfect. Let’s take a look at some of the finer points of this modern daily driver – the rally inspired brute.

POWER

With stock power to the crank rated at 265hp/244lb-ft and a weight of 3208 pounds, the WRX gets moving in a hurry. Couple those numbers with an all-world all-wheel drive (AWD) system and it can best the 0-60 time of most sport sedans and coupes at double the price point (claimed 4.9s). A bone stock WRX, however, is never enough for an enthusiast or WRX owner. This is evidenced by the staggering amount of owners who modify their cars to obtain more power. But this car has ample power for a daily driver (DD). Yes I clamor for more as well, but since there have been zero reliability issues and no tuning or aftermarket engine parts, it will stay stock for the near future. FYI, tuning and bolt on parts don’t necessarily mean an unreliable car, but that’s a topic for another article. When boost kicks in, you feel it and it’s addicting. I’ve caught myself roaming around in 2nd and 3rd gears in hope for a time where I can boost. Shut up I know it’s bad, but man is it fun. A 5-speed manual transmission is the only transmission offered for this car (6MT in the STI) and it’s more than adequate, but I do yearn for a 6th gear on the highway. RPMs are pinned at 3k @ ~75mph.

HANDLING

In the Subaru community, this generation of WRX is renowned for being a very good handling car, but not great. I would agree with this on every level. The STI is another story, but the WRX just isn’t up to snuff. Yes coming from a Honda Civic or Accord (both admirable handling cars in their own right for a DD), you will notice a marked improvement in handling. The thing is, once you get used to it, you’ll want it to be sharper and more refined. The ’14 WRX (GR generation designation) has a LOT of body roll. This can be remedied by fitting aftermarket sway bars to the front and rear of the car. Once done, it corners much flatter. Until you do any suspension work, you’re going to enjoy yourself, but much like the power you’ll end up wanting more. That said, this car can handle nearly any turn you throw at it on a back road, especially with the AWD system and the summer tires the car comes with. If you’re going to do track days or autocross, you’ll want a better set of tires (Michelin Pilot Super Sports come to mind) and a few suspension upgrades to get a better time and have a better time.

RIDE QUALITY

So this is a tricky category. The WRX comes standard with 17” wheels equipped with 235/45/17 Dunlop summer tires and on this combination it is peppy in turns and glides over smooth pavement with ease, just like a small hatchback should. Once bumps are hit, vibrations will be directed into the suspension, frame, A-pillars, and your crotch. I’ve never been in a car that absorbs bumps so poorly; especially potholes. I thought I’d bent a wheel several times, but turns out it’s only just incredibly jarring and loud. Good to know. On the other side of this argument, if you’re a WRX owner and a savvy enthusiast and live in a state where temps get below 50 on the regular in the winter, you’ll want dedicated winter wheels and tires. Living in NJ, I opted for an old set of 16” 2004 WRX wheels (same bolt pattern of 5×100) with 205/55/16 General Altimax Arctic tires. When on these, those bumps and hard ride conditions all but disappear. The suspension is obviously still sport tuned, but the ride gets a bit squishier due to the increased amount of sidewall and a softer, more malleable compound. The tradeoff is that the winter tires are much louder (79 db at a 70mph cruise on summer tires; 85db with winters) during highway driving. So there’s really two types of ride quality here, but neither are very good. This is not a grand tourer with enough sound insulation to keep a small house warm. If you can deal with that, then you’re fine and you’ll enjoy the sporty ride.

BRAKING

All I can say about the brakes is that they’re adequate for a DD, but they should have been upgraded by Subaru. More stopping power is needed, but if you’re not going very fast they are fine. If in an emergency situation, they will be inadequate for avoidance. For spirited driving they are fine for back road use, but again inadequate for track or autocross work.

TECH

Subaru is not known for its technology prowess and it shows. I opted for the OEM navigation system and while it does improve sound quality in the car, it’s lacking in the turn-by-turn directions. Is it a unit that routinely has put me into a lake or wooded area? No. Not at all. It’s just a bit archaic and slow. It’s like having a Laptop from 2008 today. Still works, but you want the upgrade. Other than that, the Bluetooth™ connectivity with my iPhone 5S and 6S has never failed once when attempting to pair automatically. Voice dialing is easy and works well with a 90% success rate (seriously guys just speak at a normal volume and enunciate. It’s not difficult to grasp). There is an annoying safety feature though. You cannot type in an address or use voice dialing when the car is in motion above 5mph. This is to deter the driver from taking their eyes off the road. While safer, this could be solved via the voice commands, but Subaru did not implement that particular bit of code into the unit. Newer units are easier to use and much more user friendly, but this model is lacking.

FUN FACTOR

Off the charts. I love taking the back way to work. I do it more often than not and my MPGs suffer for it, but I honestly don’t care. This car is an absolute blast to drive in the twisties. The aforementioned AWD system and summer rubber give it grip for days and corners can be taken with reckless abandon if you are so inclined; within reason of course. Street racing and unsafe driving are the height of stupidity, but there’s nothing wrong with opening up your sports car on a back road as long as you’re in control and not going 70 in a 30. And though this car can easily do that, it’s not even needed. Going only 10 over, as most normal motorists do, makes even the most mundane corners seem fun. Body roll aside, there really aren’t many cars you can find at this price point that will be more fun.

CABIN

I’m going to let you in on a secret the WRX community knows about all too well. EVERYTHING rattles. No, seriously. Everything. Day 2 of ownership saw the trunk privacy cover develop a rattle that never went away. Took that out the day after I found the noise. The dashboard clicks when it’s cold due to the plastic joints not being completely fitted together. The driver seat has developed a squeak when pressing in the clutch pedal or making a similar motion with my left leg. The passenger side dash is also rattling, but I’m unsure of the source. I’ve wedged a small piece of paper in the driver-side, front passenger window control because if the volume on the stereo is above 15, the bass rattles the switch to the point of severe annoyance. Without going into further details, as there are more rattles to speak of, this car is made to be incredibly safe yet sounds like it’s coming apart at the seams. No matter, because if you can deal with the noises the complaints end there. The cabin is spacious for a smaller car. Head room is ample and front seat volume is tremendous. Back seat space is fairly good as well, but might get uncomfortable for anyone over 6’ on trips over an hour. You might be saying, “How dare you comment on space, you’re a Hobbit.” And while you might be partially correct (I am quite short) I can assure you than more than 5 people have driven my car ranging in heights from 5’6” to 6’2” and non of them complained about room in the driver’s seat. Nor has anyone complained about the room in the back and the same sized people have been back there for greater than 1 hour trips. And the best part, it’s a hatchback! If you need more room to haul anything, just fold the back seats down. I’ve never had a problem for space with golf clubs (4 sets and 4 grown men fit snugly, but they fit), skis, or car parts/wheels/tires.

INTERIOR

The interior itself is above average, but could be much better. The limited trim option I went with gives you leather, heated seats, and HID headlights along with fog lights. That’s pretty much it. It’s $1000 more than the Premium package and while the leather and HIDs are nice (you still get heated cloth seats in the premium model), I’d have went with the Premium package and retrofitted a nice set of lights from a reputable light company/modifier if I could buy this car again. The leather is not the highest quality, but it seems very durable. I tend to slam myself down into my car without thinking about 90% of the time and so far the leather shows little signs of fading or wearing. The color scheme is 2-tone with black in the lower half and an off crème, sort of beige-ish color on the top half. It sounds worse than it is. I’ve only really noticed it twice. Nor should this be your reason to not buy the car. The seats are surprisingly comfortable on long trips, but can get a bit stiff after the 4 hour mark. Then again what seat doesn’t? Bolstering on the sides keeps you firmly planted when giving it the beans on a back road with minimal sliding. The rumors of sliding around on this leather are overblown and I’m fairly certain are only echoed by < 115lb people under 5’ tall. The leather wrapped steering wheel is particularly nice, but ridiculously cold during the winter months. Gloves are hugely recommended. The red “WRX” stitching into the integrated head rests is a nice touch and hasn’t worn off on me. Overall, it’s a nice place to be when making a commute.

LUXURY

This car, apart from the leather and sat nav, is not luxiorous in any way shape or form. Its hard angles and bulbous rear end outside make for a love it or hate it style with no elegance what so ever. The inside is a dressed up commuter hatch. If you’re looking for sumptuous essentials in a Subaru, you should be looking at the Legacy/Outback or a Lexus/German rival, not a WRX. Is it more luxurious than an Impreza? Yes. Is that saying much? No.

PRICE

Price point on this car was excellent. Without diving into what I paid for it, at the time of purchase you could get a brand new base WRX for ~$25,000. For the limited, a bit more, but for the fun you get with this car and the fact that you can’t find much in the way of hot hatchery in the US (newly released Focus RS aside), the price is spot on and in my honest opinion, a steal.

In summation, this car is a bit different than what I thought on my initial test drive. And that only goes to show first impressions, while good, should not be the basis of a snap decision especially on a purchase as large as a car. By all means, drive everything you can, but make your decisions slowly and carefully. For me, I’m still very glad I bought this car. I love it and I really wouldn’t trade it for nearly anything currently available (Focus RS is on the short list).

Despite, or perhaps because of its performance-symbol status, the Subaru WRX hasn’t always proven to be the most reliable car. Or even the most reliable Subaru, for that matter. Then again, even well-regarded icons like the Nissan Skyline GT-R have their good and bad years. And, just like there are reliable BMWs, there are some reliable WRX models.

2004-2007 Subaru WRX

Although the first US-market Subaru WRX arrived in 2002, Road & Track reports, as with many first-model-year cars, it had some issues. Club WRX forum users report the 2002 and 2003 cars are known for weak transmissions. This is exacerbated by the WRX’s all-wheel-drive nature. AWD adds traction, which is great for snow but launches put more stress on the clutch and transmission.

By 2004, though, Club WRX forum users report the transmission issues had been ironed out. The WRX also received new styling, going from the ‘Bugeye’ to the ‘Blobeye’ design. 2004 was also the first year the hard-core STI model was available, Hagerty reports, which featured an electronically-controllable center differential. It was also the last year the car used the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, which made 227 hp in the WRX and 276 hp in the STI.

2006 Subaru Impreza WRX STI

2004, along with 2005-2007 model years, are the best-regarded years for the WRX, Hagerty, and r/Cars sub-Reddit users report. 2006 (the ‘Hawkeye’ year) saw the Subaru WRX receive a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, which made 300 hp in the STI, Hagerty reports. The base car made 230 hp on paper, Motor Trend reports, but in reality, it developed quite a bit more. Plus, MT reports, for 2006 the cars received a stronger transmission and reinforced clutch. The STI also got an updated center differential.

The 2004-2007 WRX models are highly-rated for several reasons. Firstly, these were all part of the first generation of US-market WRX cars. Secondly, the base WRX could be ordered as a wagon, though the STI was sedan-only. Also, in addition to avoiding the 02-03 cars’ transmission issues, they avoid the 2008 model’s dynamic flaws, R&T reports.

2011-2014 Subaru WRX

However, precisely because of their desirability, a 2004-2007 WRX can be quite pricey, especially in stock STI form. An excellent-condition car, Hagerty reports, can go for $34,000. Though, admittedly, on Bring a Trailer, the average is closer to $20,000. In addition, although Car and Driveradmires the 2004 STI’s raw nature, in terms of interior quality and overall refinement, it’s rather lacking.

Luckily, for those wanting more day-to-day comfort, a 2011-2014 WRX also comes recommended byr/Cars sub-Reddit users. By 2015, the WRX was its own model, separate from the base Impreza sedan. However, that was also the year the car developed transmission issues, Torque News reports. Ever since then, the WRX has continuously been ranked low by Consumer Reports. In fact, it’s the only modern Subaru to receive a below-average reliability score.

2011 Subaru Impreza WRX STI

By 2011, Car and Driver reports, the base Subaru WRX’s 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder put out 265 hp and 244 lb-ft. But, although it only had a 5-speed manual, and the 305-hp STI a 6-speed, the base car was actually faster to 60. However, even the sharper-handling STI was comfortable enough for daily-driving, Autoweek reports. And during Autoweek’s year-long review of the STI, the car never broke down.

Issues to look out for

To be sure, even these rather reliable Subaru WRX models do have some issues to take note of. For one, r/Cars sub-Reddit users report their engines require constant attention to oil level and oil change schedules. Also, as with other turbocharged cars, lugging the engine—high gear, low RPM—is more stressful than downshifting and keeping RPMs up.

2004 STIs, R&T reports, can wear down their steering rack bushings and wheel bearings, especially if track-driven. 2005-2006 models are really only susceptible to broken motor mounts, which are fairly inexpensive. The 2007 STI was known for some ECU tuning issues causing acceleration hesitation, though this appears to have been rectified.

In addition, all 2004-2007 and 2011-2014 WRX cars can suffer from ringland failure. As Come and Drive It explains, ringlands are the parts on the side of the piston which hold the piston rings. These rings help seal the combustion chamber and control oil flow. However, engines that have been improperly tuned, run on low-octane fuel and generally abused develop knocking issues. When this happens, fuel combusts uncontrollably, which can fracture the ringlands and cause further engine damage.

Also, Garage Dreams reports the Subaru WRX is prone to head gasket leaks and failures. Because non-STI models had smaller intercoolers, the heat was able to build up more rapidly and dissipate more slowly. This, especially if combined with excessive tuning, degraded the gasket.

2005 Saab 9-2X

Finally, if you find that a 2004-2007 model isn’t refined enough, a Saab 9-2X Aero is basically a 2005-2006 WRX, but with added refinement.

There is one more category of Subaru WRX that we haven’t discussed yet. As with the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo and Toyota Celica GT4, US fans never got the real first-gen car. But now, they’re old enough to import.

1995 Subaru Impreza WRX Wagon

From 1995, Jalopnik reports, Subaru offered the Impreza WRX as a wagon. And they’re relatively affordable. Importer Japanese Classics recently sold one for $12,995. But, not only did the first-gen car get an STI trim, Subaru offered even more rally-ready versions.

One of these, SpeedHunters reports, was the Type RA. Engineers removed sound deadening, the A/C, and ABS to save weight. Instead of power windows, it had crank ones. And in addition to the STI’s upgraded springs, it received larger anti-roll bars and upgraded dampers. As of this writing, Japanese Classics has one listed for $17,495.

Like most other sedans, Subaru WRX is one of the very affordable vehicles that are a perfect choice for new drivers. Subaru WRX is even more exciting for drivers who prefer sports-like handling. On the other hand, this sporty design style resulted in a very low Subaru WRX reliability score of two out of five, according to J.D. Power Dependability Study. 

Auto Repairs Are EXPENSIVE


In this article, we will walk you through an overview of the Subaru WRX vehicle characteristics. Then, we will present to you the different reliability scoring that this vehicle received from the JD power dependable study, in addition to the RepairPal reliability scoring study. Finally, we will highlight the main strengths of the Subaru WRX vehicle along with the main reasons why this vehicle received a very low-reliability score.  

Subaru WRX overview 

 

One of the main features of the Subaru WRX is its engine. The vehicle comes with a very powerful Turbocharger 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that is associated with a six-speed manual transmission. This engine provides up to two 268 horsepower, and the base model comes with a standard all-wheel drive. 

The Subaru WRX is featured for the great handling and the relatively roomy cabin. This vehicle received very high safety scores. This vehicle provides from 17 to 21 miles per gallon on city roads and 22 to 27 miles per gallon on the highways.

Some of the new features for the 2019 model is that the auto an Apple CarPlay comes with the standard model, the STI models have five horsepower higher, and the vehicle comes with a very large infotainment system.  The infotainment system is very user friendly where the passengers can enjoy the HD or the satellite radio, the Bluetooth, and the backup camera.

Subaru WRX Reliability 

 

According to cars.usnews.com, the Subaru WRX has a low-reliability score of two out of five. This scoring is based on the JD Power and Associates vehicle dependability study. Despite this low-reliability score, the WRX received the highest safety scores from the IHS and an NHTSA rating of five stars. 

The JD Power dependability study looks into four main variables when evaluating their liability for any vehicle. These variables are quality and reliable, driving experience, resale, and dealership experience. 

Quality and reliability reflect the owner's experience about the vehicle components starting from the engine to the infotainment system. The driving experience is direct owner valuation to vehicle performance in terms of comfort, safety functionality, and technology. Resale is its production from the JD power about any reduction in value for any vehicle. Lastly, dealership experience represents how satisfied were the customers when they visit the dealership in terms of service process dealership facilities and the quality of work. 

According to the JD power dependable to study, the Subaru WRX received an overall scoring of 82. When looking at each category separately, the Subaru WRX received is 77 out of 100 and the quality and reliability, 88 in the driving experience, 85 in the resale, and 82 in the dealership experience. 

On the other hand, when looking at the RepairPal reliability scoring, we found that the Subaru WRX received a rating of 3.5 out of five, which makes it the 32nd out of 36 compact cars. Although the score might look like above average, the vehicle still did not score well in many of the subcategories in this scoring criteria. 

Repair pal looks into reliable scoring through three main variables cost frequency and severity. Cost represents the average annual cost for unexpected repairs. Frequency represents the number of times a vehicle was brought to a repair shop for unexpected repairs across the year hear it. Finally, severity represents how severe the damaged or there appear when the vehicle was brought to their repair shop spirit 

according to PayPal results, Subaru WRX is expected to cost about $682 on average fare year for unexpected repairs, which is higher than all compact cars that cost about $526 on average per year. 

Like all other compact cars, Subaru WRX is expected to be brought to the repair shop for unexpected repairs about 0.3 times a year.

When it comes to severity, the RepairPal reliability scoring showed that About 14% of their peers performed on the Subaru WRX we're related to major issues. This percent is much higher than all compact cars, 11%. 

Therefore, even though they overall scoring for the Subaru WRX was 3.5 out of five, when comparing this vehicle to the other competitors of compact vehicles, the reliability score drops drastically. 

Why did Subaru WRX receive a lower level of the score?

 

The lower level the score for the Subaru WRX reflects long lists of cons that this vehicle received. Although this vehicle has one of the best performance force values, it is not perfect.  Thus, here are the reasons why you might need to stay away from the Subaru WRX:

 

  • Might have a stiff right experience  

 

 

Since the vehicle is more like a sporty style, you might experience some stiff writing. Therefore, if you prefer a plush like right, the Subaru WRX might not be the best choice for you as you will feel every bumpy road and will leave you disappointed if you are looking for a comfortable ride. 

 

  • They hard to use the clutch   

 

 

Since the Subaru WRX is equipped with a manual transmission, it might be a little hard for some people to use the clutch. Also, if you don't press the throttle smoothly, you might start feeling transmission jerk. 

 

  • Looks like an ordinary economy car    

 

 

The design of the WRX is focused on providing a sporty right and more excitement. That's why I don't expect to find a high interior, luxurious style. If you are sitting in the WRX, you will not feel the difference between this car and any ordinary economy car. 

 

  • Fuel efficiency might be a problem in some models     

 

 

As we mentioned before, the Subaru WRX is equipped with a manual transmission, and If you decided to switch to an automatic transmission, expect a significant decrease in fuel economy. You will notice this difference, especially when you're driving on heavy traffic. That's why all drivers are recommended to use premium unleaded fuel to improve this vehicle's fuel efficiency. 

 

  • The lowest reliability between all competitors
